Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

I would like to know if these are original and what the application would be. Came off a 68 c-20, and have a gm stamp on them. Any idea on value? Any info would be great. Looks like they are around 8 or 8 1/2" wide, x 16.5" thanks, Eric

They are 8.25x16.5 and were an available option. The size may be stamped into the outer rim,but hard to see.I know Stilookin needs two and he just bought two recently. So,he`d tell you their worth. Not something a post-68 guy would need.Diamonds-in-the-rough to a pre-69 8-lugger.

Re: Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

Thanks for the info. So they were just an option or like a camper special option? The truck they came off had a rear end with a 10 bolt cover, 3:54 gears with the big axle sticking through the rim. Is it worth trying to get? Thanks...

I`d say yes.The hiway gears are in demand now.Did that truck have a big block?I think that is the only way those gears were offered. Is it a coil or leaf rear?

Re: Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

Special-K is correct the only way to get those 3.54 gears is with a big block. The small block option was 4.10...down from 4.57 stock. My big block Longhorn has a the 3.54 and it is a Dana 60 and my small block Longhorn has the 4.57 and it is an Eaton HO52. Anybody have a 4.10 small block option? I am curious as to whether or not it was an Eaton or Dana. My '72 Longhorn has a Dana...I am now wondering if it is a 3.54...I don't know what they did in later years.

I love those wheels and have them on my Longhorn. I also have two Firestone Duplex 9.75" x 16.5" wheels. I am looking for two more of the Firestones. I have seen the 8,25" in the bone yard for $15/each. I have seen a full set at the swap meet with serviceable tires for $50-$60. They are hard to find with the hub cap clips and very desireable for us stock resto guys. Nobody else likes them because there is a limited set of options on the 16.5 tires. They are not expensive it is just that there are only about three companies manufacturing the tires now. I just discovered last night that putting trim ring in these wheels is next to impossible due to the slope of the wheel on the outer edge. I will figure out a way to mount mine but it will not be easy...anyone have any ideas?

BTW...buy those wheels and keep them around somebody is going to need them for sure!

This place shows some 16 1/2" trim rings. It looks like you can buy 16 1/2" hubcaps too. john

Re: Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

catseye, That was trick photography...I used a 16" trim ring and balanced it in there. My 16.5 trim rings are brand new and I did not want to try them...well I did and I am disappointed. I will figure out a way to make them work though!

John, I checked out the site...only late model hubcaps but they do have the 16.5 trim rings. If they are like mine...the won't work on those wheels. I got my rings with the truck...I guess the guy never tried to put them on...at least there were no finger prints on them and they were still in the wrappers.

It is always a challenge with these old trucks.

Well, I recently sold my old set of "farm" wheels for $175 for the set of 4. They were factory 16x7s with 235/85-16s on them.

Re: Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

Andy, Were they an Eaton HO52 or a Dana? I have been dying to find out what ratio the Dana 60 is that is under my '72 Longhorn. I would bet the Dana is a 3.54!

According to my GM Restoration Guide the 4.10 was the only option for 3/4 ton small blocks. The C30 in '68 had more options 4.10, 5.14 and 6.17. Interesting that the big block in the C30 only listed 4.10 as standard with no options available. If you stare at the option sheet long enough you see a pattern of smaller engines and deeper gears. They apparently would not let purchase a set of gears that your engine could not pull. I guess that is why the taller gears are so rare in C20 and C30 trucks.

Re: Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

too much stuff:
My 68 Big-Block C-20 Custom Camper has a stock Dana 60 (coils) with the 3.54 gears. I had never had a truck rear-end with anything less than a 4.10 before I found this truck and it is really a pleasure to drive on the freeway. You should buy that rear-end if it hasn't been grenaded.

Mike (stlookin):
Aren't the trim rings already on your longhorn on those 8.25x16.5 rims?

Re: Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

I have only seen one dana under a 67 - 72, and that was longhorn jeff's 69 camper special CST/20... 396 BB with the 3.54 dana... I don't think I have heard of a big block with anything but a dana..nothing coming to mind anyways.
All of mine were HO axles...52 in the first longhorn and in the parts truck, and a 72 in the one ton.

Re: Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

My big block Longhorn has a Dana 60 3.54 and there were no other optional ratios available. My '72 Longhorn has a Dana so it must be a 3.54 ratio as well...and was probably a big block truck. Too bad someone stole the motor mounts! The GM '68 Restoration Guide says that the 3/4 ton trucks with the optional leaf springs also came with the Dana 60 4.56 as standard or with a Dana 60 4.10 as the optional ratio. If that is the case...why were the Longhorns, which came with leaf springs given the Eaton rearends? If true to form they should all have had Dana's big block or small block.

Good point. From what we had run through here on other threads,it seemed like it was leaf/Dana and coil/Eaton on 3/4t Chevys. You are talking 3/4t Longhorns?I had a`69 stepside C/20:396,coils,and Dana60 now that I`m thinking about it.I guess that was because the big blocks had 3.42s.

Re: Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

The only truck with a big block that didn't have a dana rear was probably a C30 dually, so it would've had the HO72 on leaf springs.

Those wheels are very cool. I've only found one and have had he!! finding another. They're not the ones with clips, they're just like regular steel wheels with four tabs that the hubcaps go on.

Re: Stock 3/4 ton wheels, wide.

Robert, Keep trying the swap meets and old tire shops. I saw 4 of them without clips at the Monroe meet. They were pretty much all different but two were 8.25 and two were 9.75. They are out there! If you are looking for a particular wheel, I will keep my eyes open for some. Like I said...I find them around here for about $15/each...they are just hard to find and only a few guys want them.

If you order a custom set from Wheel Vintiques with trim rings and a generic hubcap you will spend just short of $700 with shipping!

Rears:The info I have says all big blocks in`71(except C/30)only came with 3.42s which is the Dana.It also says that big blocks weren`t available with posi or the 4spd.Anyone seen an exception to that on a bonified original?My`69 C/20 Stepside was a base truck with a 396/TH400/Dana60/coil.It seemed odd that it wasn`t a 4spd.

Holy cow, leave town for a few days and find out i have to go look this truck over again!!!! The truck has coils in the rear, and a 3 speed auto tranny. (motor and tranny are gone) Is the rear worth grabbing for the right price? What is a good price? Anything else i should look for on this truck?? It also didn't say anything about a big block in the glovebox. Thanks for all the info... Eric

Dana 60 did not come 3.42 ratio, the lowest in Chevy was 3.54 and Ford was 3.33. This is per Dana the people that made them. The 3.42 was a 1/2 ton ratio.
