1980 GMC Sierra Classic; 4x4, SWB

I just bought this fleetside GMC half ton. The story goes that it has been through a couple of local owners, & been around my area for a bit. I finally convinced the last owner to part with it. It is fairly original (occasional paint work, period correct accessories, big tires, rear bumper appears not stock, etc), complete, numbers matching & everything is there.

According to GM vintage, it is 1 of 1,199 produced for sale in CANADA for 1980.
1 of 351, with YE9, top level Sierra Classic trim
1 of 201, with AV5, high back bucket seats & console (the cloth trim piece on the console cover is still good & something you dont see anymore).
1 of 3, ordered with the 10R-15LT tires.

350 CI, SRW, locking Differential, 4 spd standard, everything except AC.

Really nice project truck, but generally speaking, U.S. production is 10x Canadian, so I'm not sure it is all that rare, but nice to have & know. Any thoughts?

Spent a few hours cleaning it up. Exterior is excellent.

Very clean truck! I'm jealous. What are your plans for it?

Thanks. The true mileage is unknown.

Well... I have spent some time going through this & whats needed to bring it back to a top notch restoration. I am beginning to think i may be in over my head. It needs a lot of metal replaced or fixed underneath, and might be more than i am able to get into.

I am so disappointed. I've become emotionally attached! & i believe with its good, low production options that this is a great project. It's all original, everything is there, numbers match, etc.
After the original owner passed, apparently it sat in the yard for a couple years, & though its been a daily driver for years now, it needs & deserves more $$ than i want to part with.
It really deserves the TLC required to make it good & has a great back story of the local original purchaser.
I am going to have to make a decision on what to do next.

I'm sorry to hear that...it really is a beautiful truck. What metal needs replacing? Inner body? Frame? Suspension? I think most folks on here would agree with me that the majority of these trucks turned out to require more effort and money than originally expected.

Indeed. So I know that the math on cost of panels, paint, labour, etc from my list... Is not the end. Harsh realizations!

Needs
Beyond usual minor mechanical fix ups & repairs (ie leaky PS), Mostly sheet metal. Floors, inner fenders, bottoms of rear quarters, box possibly, big rust clean up on frame & suspension parts. Sound, but in need of care.
Paint. Poss a drive shaft. Sigh...

Time to make a trip to the local pick and pull! Would you be doing the work yourself?
