What is involved in switching a metal bed floor to a wooden floor & how much does it cost? Thx Ira

From what I understand, the front panel is different, with a ledge sticking out that the wood rests on, and the rear support is different as well. I think the cross sills underneath are the same, but I could be wrong in that. I'm going to be putting wood in mine, since I haven't been able to find a good bed floor around here yet.

If I'm wrong on the cross sills, I'm sure someone will correct me.

As far as cost, depends on whether you do the wood working yourself, or order the wood premade. I think GMC Paul's has the wood available, plus the metal strips to go between. The wood is about $310, the steel strips are around $70, and the bolt kit is about $40.

The cross sills are also different , due to the 3/4" thickness of the wood. the steel floor has the cross sills also spot welded to the bottom........Good luck

There is a show-quality (the ad says it, not me) wooden bed that is laid on top of the steel floor for late model trucks. Looks to me like that principle could work for ours, too.

For me, though, I'm gonna go with Rhino, or Line-X, for instance. If both sides of the bed and the floor are coated thusly, the rest of the truck should just rust around it and leave a sharp edge! That'll keep folks on their toes when they reach into it, lest they cut themselves on said sharp, rusty edges and risk tetanus.
