Ball joints

Ok, so I got all the whole front end out from the 71 GMC 1/2 ton donor truck for my disk brake conversion. I called Napa to order new ball joints, and they tell me that the 71 with disk brakes are the same as the 68 with drum brakes. Why am I hearing that I have to replace the ball joints if this is the case. Thanks for the help.

Re: Ball joints

Re: Ball joints

Any idea what the differences are? Length, thickness?

Re: Ball joints

They're both different, upper and lower.

Hit Rockauto, O Reilly, or whatever parts store website you prefer and catalog them.

Uppers are 71-72 specific and then 73-87. Lowers are the same, 71-87.

Re: Ball joints

Since you have the entire front end out of the 71 you can compare it to your 68 and see what is different.

Re: Ball joints

If you go to the MOOG suspension parts website, they are different for upper and lower.
1968 C10 Upper
1968 C10 Lower
1971 C10 Upper
1971 C10 Lower

The G series, Vans do share some parts between the years. Some of the differences are taper and bolt diameter.
