Anybody running a Demon Carb instead of an edelbrock?

I have an opportunity to pick up a slightly used Demon Road Demon carb, I've had a few tuning issues with my edelbroack 1406, anybody have experience good or bad with the Demon?

Only good , from what I have seen and heard. Plus you have a wide variety of parts and supplies for demon and holley carbs.
Problems out of an Edelbrock?? Personally I hate an Edelbrock. Others swear by them. But not me.

My Edelbrock was on the truck when I bought it, it runs way too rich at idle, but the truck hauls when I punch it, I can't get enough traction under 35MPH other wise I just smoke the rear tire, (I'm working on a posi unit). I've heard good things too, I just don't want to jump on it without some advice/experience from someone who runs one on a 350

I've been selling auto parts & speed parts for 14 years and I can tell ya both are great choices for carburetion. Edelbrocks are good all around street carbs, you just have to be willing to make the effort to tune them properly. Try to track down the Edelbrock "Bible" carb tuning book (Edelbrock #0034) any decent mechanic can tune one with this book. Demons are better for more serious performance, they tune just like Holley's & use most the same parts. One thing to watch for on some older Demons is they had a problem with the air bleed system but its a quick fix with new air bleeds (Demon/Barry Grant #421392) Also I would never install a used carb w/o taking it apart first to make sure theres no junk in the bowls.

HHHmmmm... decisions decisions, I think the Demon is less then a year old & maybe was used less then 6-8 months on a truk that didn't get drove much, it was an older guy & he didn't like how it idled, his truck does not have the modifications that mine has so maybe it would be fine for me, mine has a very noticeable lope, it's a friend of mines dad, so maybe I'll try it over the weekend & see how I like it, hopefully I won't need anything special to adapt it/hook it up, I have a performer RPM manifold, I read on Edelbrocks website that they don't recommend the 1406 on an RPM manifold, maybe that's my problem? I didn't get whay they don't recommend it.

Both are universal carbs so they will perform differently on different displacement engines and diff elevations. Its all about tuning. Its easy for a frustrated mechanic to blame the whole carb, when virtually all the internal parts are tuneable and replaceable. The Demon should bolt right on your Performer RPM. If you're switching from an Edelbrock carb you'll need to make some minor changes to the fuel line and the linkage.

I skimmed through the replies, and didn't see this addressed.

The 1406 is a 600cfm carb, which works great with a performer manifold, but the
RPM manifolds are larger, require a 750cfm carb.

That carb is too small, so you could either swap for a larger carb (ie edelbrock 1411), or step down to a smaller manifold.

Idle circuit went out? What does that mean? Is this a replaceable part?

I thought a 750cfm was too big for a small block? Even with the RPM manifold.

I have an 850 speed demon, I called Summit for a rebuild kit and Summit alerted me they have discontinued them...... I call Barry Grant directly and they swear all is good. I like mine but is a race only part, not something I'd try to put around with. I have heard good stuff about the road demons, but it just sounds like you need to tune your edelbrock, atmosphere and altitude effect the carb and if it is rich you need to change the metering rods, H@ul @ss mode is cool, but idle and part throttle are where you spend the majority of your time driving, so tune it. If you don't know how, call Edelbrock, they have a help center that can give ideas as to where to start and the parts, I live in high altitude 5-6,000ft so I call and the tech says, yep you need this, that simple. The edel has been great since, so has the speed demon!

SO? 70RS/SS are you saying stay with the Edelbrock? I figure for $150 for the Road Demon, It'd be kinda fun to try it out, I've heard alot of people say they love em, one guy who went from an edlebrock to the road Demon said it was like night & day the performance was soooo much better with the Demon, I just figured I'd do whater is necessary to the Demon before I install it in the truck.

I had a road demon on a ZZ4 motor, had trouble with the idle circuit but performance was good. Just took a Holley off my '72 GMC, 330HP crate motor because I could not lean it out. I replaced it with an Edelbrok 1406, leaned it two stages at sea level and it runs and idles fairly lean, not a race setup but good daily driver setup. Picked up 3 plus mpg on 500 mile trip. A lot of the guys I talked to at rod runs seem to have a problem with the street-ability of the demon carbs. Who knows ??

I bought a Road Demon Jr. last spring to put on my 350 with an Edlebrock performer and I haven't been able to get it dialed in. I've adjusted the choke and reset the floats many times but it still runs way too rich when I first start the car. Seems to run pretty good on the highway but my tailpipes are pretty black & sooty so I think it's running too rich all the time. I'm not saying it's the carbs fault but if you are looking for something to put on & go it's probably not going to happen with the Demon. I've read the booklet 3 or 4 times but I guess it's just not soaking in. I'm thinking about getting a new Quadrajet and putting on it. I'm tired of jackin' around.....

I love everything Edelbrock makes. Except their carbs. I like Holleys myself, never heard anything bad about a Demon...

I have the 625 Road Demon and love it!. I had the Edelbrock on it before and there is no comparison performance wise, even though it was reliable. I had a well known racer tune my Demon and timing -WOW what a difference he made!.

I had a 625 Road Demon (Vac. secondary) on my 454. I love it. I use a bigger Holley double pumper for performance only. When I'm just driving around town I use my Road Demon. On weekends or special shows I put on the Holley 800. I did have to re-jet both carbs for my elevation. The Road Demon idles smoother, the Holley has more neck jerking response. Hey thatnks you guys, I appreciate your insite, man 70C10 you seem to always have the info I need, I need to buy you a Beer or 2, I think I might just try it, nothing like testing before buying right? I'm no carb tuner so it's getting old having to have someone dink with it, I want to get it dialed in go drive around & enjoy it, hopefully the rain will let up so I can do some test driving over the weekend.

Don't feel bad, I'm not a carb tuner either,lol. I started my truck yesterday for the first time in 3 months and it fired right up!. When I went with the Demon I bumped my initial timing up to 19 degrees and the total is 42 degrees. Of course that was with my old harmonic balancer. I never checked it with the new balancer to see if that's correct.

If you go Demon...get the Road Demon, NOT the Road Demon Jr. I have heard nightmares about them not staying tuned at all.

Go with the demon. I've had 3 of them on different applications and love em'.
The construction alone of a demon is reason enough to buy it. Billet base plate, billet metering blocks, screw in air bleeds, 4 corner idle adjustment and sight bowls for beginners. Holley's and Edelbrock carbs are also good but the quality just isn't there. The demon carb is precision machined and drilled, not sand cast like the ones mentioned above. Meaning, even if the demon is used, there aren't any holes with burrs to dirt and goo to hang onto.

I have a 650 speed demon mechanical secondary and once dialed it in I haven't touched it in over 2 years.

I got it last night, cleaned it up a bit with Carb Cleaner, These things are built like a tank! I love it so far, is ther anything I should do/change before I bolt it on? I know it ran fine other then the old guy said that he didn't like the way it Idled, but...what does that mean? His motor was mostly stock other then headers, so I don't want to change much till I try it, where's a good place to get info/parts kits for these Road Demons? Oh this one has Vacume secondaries, not sure what my 1406 was.

My father...and a buddy of mine both run Demons, and they've both had the same problems.

My dad bought his because its shiny and looks good sitting between his stainless fenders/firewall on top of his polished 427 side oiller. And my buddy bolted one up to a stock, worn out 350 in his mid-80s truck.

Both had the same problem....the idle circuit went out. They ran good off idle and were just mean at WOT.

I know someone said it earlier....but I have to reiterate. They arent street friendly, they were designed for and used primarily for racing.


Just a side note...my truck had a Carter 4bbrl on it the day I brought it home. Less then a week later I had on an Edelbrock....Ha, I threw back on the Carter until I had the money to upgrade. I was working at Autozone at the time and I bought me a brand new Holley Street Avenger. I went way to big for my tired 327....770CFM, but it was all we had in stock. So here I am a year and a half later and I love it...it was set dead on out of the box. The only problem was I couldnt fit my air filter over the bowls, but a 1/2in spacer fixed that right up.
