PROJECT: Patina'd
This is really gunna take some time to catch this thread up to where it is now. I thought I'd start off by showing what it looked like the day I bought it for $2,500. It was a hospital grounds truck in Medford, OR. I think it was pulled in each night which might help explain the almost zero rust. It was a 250 6 banger with the 4 speed granny 1st and a 6' shifter. Out back was a 3.73 open rear end.

If you haven't seem my other threads.....it doesn't look like that now. I'm trying to go back in time and show what it took to get it to where it is now. I get a lot of questions as to how I got the 18.5's under it without a narrowed rear end. Stay tuned to learn how.......

Nice looking truck. I can understand the rarity of finding a rust free truck from Oregon. My stepper came from Sutherlin, rust bucket...LOL

What a really hope that people get out of this is that I can build a motor, but I have had little to no fabrication skills. I am really teaching myself on this one. Learning how to weld as I go and making all kinds of mistakes along the way. The reason why I love metal and hate wood is because you can put metal back on if you take too much off. Wood you cannot. Nothing like using a low buck truck to get good pratice. This way I'll have the necessary skills when I move onto my Fastback which is in a different catagory.
This is what the truck looked like when I first pulled it into the garage. It could have passed for a 4x4 easily. Notice how clean the engine compartment was?? |

The first thing I started on was the motor. I had an extra 460 bbc that I had pulled out of a truck I parted. I had already gone through the bottom end a couple of years ago (.030 over, forged pistons, new scat crank and fully balanced internally and externally) These are pics of me getting ready to paint the lower end.
I spent way too much time grinding and sanding the heads to give them an aftermarket look......not realizing that my alt and PS pump would almost completely cover them up!!! They still looked sweet though! It turned out pretty good for the effort. The pan was intentionally not painted because it's a drive and that wouldn't be seen anyway. Swapped out the stock head bolts for ARP fasteners. I want to hammer the point home that this is a BUDGET BUILD all the way and most new parts were bought selling old parts. The motor used to be a short pump with the alt on the driver's side. I sold the short pump, alt brackets and pullies for enough to buy everthing new you see on the front of the motor and converting the alt to the pass side. The motor is really nothing special on the top end. It's got a comp cams 280H stick with a Pete Jackson gear drive....just to be different. Performer RPM intake bolted to "702" chevy iron closed chambered oval port heads. Full Magnum roller rockers and she's fed with a Holley 750 double pumper with 4 corner idle. Mallory HEI spark. What's nice about the granny 1st 4 speeds is that they are really short. If you go with any other GM trans (muncie, TH350 or TH400) your driveline will be too long. Mine came with a beefy one piece with a little slip yoke in the front. I was able to cut down the driveline and have a TH400 yoke setup welded to the end for my muncie M-22. As you can see when next to a Camaro driveline......she's pretty bullet proof.

Out with the old and in with an original and rebuilt '69 Corvette M-22 4 speed with Hurst linage. I really think this is the 4 speed to run when you have a lot of weight and a lot of power. Kinda spendy though. I had to run the long shifter arm to clear my bench seat. I have buckets and a console.....just having got around to fabbing them up yet.
Notice the original factory tach dash?? hehehe |

I knew it was going to have to come down a long ways to even remotely look lowered. Since I knew I wasn't going to go with 5 lug disc in the front for awhile, I needed to find a good way to get it down. Since they don't make aftermarket drop spindles for drum brakes, I went with a JDM tubular lower control arm with a 3" lowered spring pocket. They say to use a max of a 2" lowering spring and they mean it. I started with a 3" and it was too much.....no alignment left. I will say that these give a great ride for the amount they dropped the truck.
Once again....I did nothing to the underside of the truck because this is a total driver and I wanted to stay consistantly dirty through out!!! LOL I had to remove the bump stop and really cut down the turn limiter because they were hitting the upper spring pocket. The turn limiter was really over-built in my opinion. The truck does not bottom out at all thanks to stout KYB shocks. |
