Unhappy 1982 GMC K3500 VIN number location

Hi everyone
I have an 82 GMC K3500 that I can't find the Vin number anywhere.I looked at the drivers side dash, frame and door posts and found nothing.I have an 80 and 83 chevy both of which have Vins on the driver side dash.Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated since I can't register this until I find the vin for verification.
Thanks
Rich

Re: 1982 GMC K3500 VIN number location

It should be on the driver's side on the dash at the base of the windshield.

It could be missing (since you didn't see it) or covered up by the wrong year dash pad.

There also should be a VIN on the frame rail, top surface of the top horizontal flange, passenger side near the forwardmost box bolt.

It will appear on the SPID label, which should be either in the glovebox or on one of the fender wheelhouse inners.

It is likely on the front of the engine, near the engine codes (RH side of block above the water pump) and/or on the transmission case (stamped on the edge of the bell).

If the truck was built in Oshawa there may be a partial VIN under the heater box (engine side of front of dash). Otherwise no.

Good luck -

K

Re: 1982 GMC K3500 VIN number location

Thanks for the info
I removed the dash pad and found nothing.I was wondering if GMC and Chevy have vins in different locations .I'll look closer at the frame. There are no labels anywhere. It has a 6.2 diesel so I'll look at that. It's a 4x4 so i'll look more closely at the trans.
Thanks again

Same assembly line, same VIN locations.

GMC and Chevy have the same locations. If it's not there, someone moved it at some point. Possibly for a cab swap. Keith hit the nail on the head, those are the places to look (specifically the frame rail). Hope it's not too rusty!

Re: 1982 GMC K3500 VIN number location

What did you find on the dash where the vin should be? just a blank space? two holes for rivets? A piece cut out of the dash where the vin used to be? The spot should be fairly obvious. Did you clean up the spot? My '81 gmc has a very light vin stamping and was/is very difficult to read, even cleaned up of dust 'n grime its still takes a good amount of squinting to properly make out the digits.

Alex.

Re: 1982 GMC K3500 VIN number location

Hi everyone
Sorry for the late response.
Thanks for all the info.Closer inspection of the dash board showed a rivet hole and a rivet with a partial Vin tag.The pad was unlike the ones in all the Chevys I have in that it did not have the spot cut out for the Vin tag.?????????????Inspection of the frame proved fruitless because of the rust.Called the guy I bought it from told him about this and that the registration that he gave me had dates that didn't match with the registration sticker on the windshield from 2011.He said he'd call the guy he bought it from but so far no call back.

Does anyone know if you can take the number on the registration sticker that I have on the windshield from 2011 and go to the DMV and have them identify the truck? It's a Connecticut truck.
Thanks very much for your help!!!

Wrong year dash pad.

Perhaps I should have been more explicit when I mentioned that as a possibility.

It's called the vehicle identification number because that's what they use to identify it. Not some sticker that can be easily peeled off.
