Re: I am wanting opinions about buying a Motor
Larry, what is your budget? That's one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle. I have a Blueprint Engines engine (that doesn't sound right) in my truck. It's been great and I have had no issues with it. Lots to look at here, https://blueprintengines.com/collect...ock+Compatible

GOPAPA- You could buy a GM HT383. Its just a 383 version of the vortec 350, strait from GM.

Re: I am wanting opinions about buying a Motor
Aint that the truth. My dad has a pretty new blueprint 383 and he is really happy with it. The GM 383 HT just needs a better cam to wake the eff up.

Re: I am wanting opinions about buying a Motor
Yeah its super low. But its literally a vortec 350 stroked with a still puny cam like he was asking for.
Personally, I don't get the love for crate engines. Rebuilding is so much fun. I like picking parts myself.

Re: I am wanting opinions about buying a Motor
I built my own. I started with a 5.7 block from a 98 1 ton - 4 bolt main and drilled for a mechanical fuel pump. I had it bored .030 over, new pistons and cam, had the heads modified for the springs, and I was into it about $2,400 for parts and machine work. That was in 2020, so I'm sure it would be more today. It helped that I have a friend who owns a machine shop, so I got parts at his cost.
I ended up with around 330 HP and 400 lb-ft of torque. And it makes the torque nice and low.

Re: I am wanting opinions about buying a Motor
You don't need to be hung up on a 4 bolt main block for what it sounds like you want to do. I will also give another thumbs up for blue print. I have a 427SBC from them that came as long block, their heads accept regular and vortec style intakes, I've used both and both seal. I've also used a SBF302 and rebuilder series 350's, all have been great. They also have a warranty and they are really helpful over the phone.
Could you source a block and work with a machine shop to build you an engine, sure. Might it be cheaper, maybe, might also have to wait for parts, find a block and hope it's good, etc etc. For $4650 you get a virgin block, a warranty, roller cam, throw your carb, intake, and distributor in and enjoy your engine, plus it's in stock ready to ship from summit. https://blueprintengines.com/collect...ec2dbf43&_ss=c

Re: I am wanting opinions about buying a Motor
You know what.. I read on here that some of you have 350 engines that run at 80 lbs preasure and it is seems ok for the motor to do that .. I could with (( help)) change out the spring to a different one and get a lower PSI ,, as for changing out the motor ,,I would need lots of help and after reading and looking at summit and others , ,the motor would run me 5 plus thousand dollars plus Tax which is 6% guessing the cost would be over 7 k
I think i need to fix what I have as I did not know the cost of new , thanks again for the help ,,I am backing off a new motor as my truck is not worth it and my age tells me to not do so.. hope you understand my thoughts on this and did not want you all to think I was dead set on a new motor..

Re: I am wanting opinions about buying a Motor
I re-read through the posts. It seems your concerns are metal flakes in the oil filter and high oil pressure. I would recommend taking an oil sample to a heavy equipment dealer near you (call first). Most can do an oil analysis and give you a good idea of the condition of your engine.
Secondly, how confident are you that your oil pressure gauge is accurate? I would use an oil pressure test kit to verify your pressure before you make any changes. They're cheap on Amazon, or you might be able to get a loaner at an auto parts store. If the oil analysis is good and the pressure really is high, you can just replace the oil pump with a standard displacement unit. I like Melling, but there are other good ones, too.

Re: I am wanting opinions about buying a Motor
Larry, I got your PM. I can probably help you. Before committing to changing out anything, do as the others have suggested and have the oil analyzed. I'd as change the oil in the engine, again if you already have done it, and cut the oil filter apart. Look through the pleats in the filter and see if it has any metal shards or flakes in it.

Re: I am wanting opinions about buying a Motor
I have found a machanic that builds race car motors to help me find out about the small metal flakes in my engine ,,He is going to run a camera down inside the motor and see what it looks like for flakes .. then he is going to check my oil pressure guage out to see if it is accurate ..then after that I can make my mind up with what next I want to do .
Where can I find a new Oil Pressure guage to fit in my dash for this 83 Chevy truck ? If I need it ?
