Edlebrock vs. Q-jet.
i just bought this brand new edlebrock 650 cfm with electric choke. but it doesn't take the hill climbs at all. as a matter of fact it cuts out on any little incline, i dont mean paved roads eather. do i need it adjusted or is the q-jet a better choise for off road use and all around better performance? i have heard you can buy an offroad kit for these things or that you can get an edlebrock tuned to run just as good or better than the old q-jet. i need all the opions i can get. thanks chevy beasts!!!

I'm not an off-roader so I don't know firsthand about the problem, but I bought a Performer Carb from a guy who was running a Chevy small block in a Jeep Wrangler. He bought the Carb new and said he tried everything he could to get it to run well on the trails. He finally gave up and put the Quadrajet back on. He seemed knowledgeable and said he wanted the Edelbrock so he could add some horses, but it just wouldn't "Perform" on the hills. He said the Quad sacrificed some power, but he was able to climb any incline without problems. And I got a helluva deal on a barely used carb.! Hope this helps. Don't you need a spacer that goes into the fuel bowl to keep fuel from sloshing around in the bowl when off-roading? That may be your problem. You're starving your engine of fuel because fuel is running away from the needle. Just a guess. Your q-jet probably has one....

your float is probably out of adjustment.. go to www.edelbrock.com go to 1406 carb.. then calibraton.. it happens in shipping..they also sell an off road jet set just for hills and trails..try adjusting the floats first..its easy..just dont lose the little clips that hold the choke rods on oh yea..its either a 600 or 750...carter makes a 625...

Bigjimz right,
If you go to the website he mentioned, there's a section in there that tells you how to change the float setting. I don't remember if it's higher or lower. It will work just fine after that. You will see some loss is MGP though. As for the offroad kit----don't buy it A waste of money.

I had a 600 1406 and it was great for regular street driving but after changing to the Rochester 700 Q Jet my truck runs WAY better other than not having a choke, cold starts take a few mins to warm up. The Edelbrock used to fall on it's face at high speeds. On the Q the secondaries are huge and I get a lot more UMPH, burn outs for 40 feet! I don't know if this helps you as far as off roading goes but I would say go Q Jet either way.
