Porterbuilt rear trailing arms in my Burb - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Picked up my parts from Nathan on Wensday and went to work.

First things first I removed my stock trailing arms and my previous crossmembes. then losely installed the new X-member and trailing arms.

Next was the NOT FUN task of removeing the two rear factory crossmembers, I removed the lower rivits by cutting a # pattern with a die grinder and then used an air chissel to remove the heads and seperate the plates, this is easier on a pickup with the bed removed but nearly impossible on the burb. Next I cut the uppers with a plasma cutter, thank goodness for a plasma cutter. I thought the hard part was over then I began removing the wood and tubs. The wood wasn't so bad but the tubs.....once again "thank goodness for a plasma cutter". They dont come out any other way. Then I test fitted a notch...more to come Tuesday.

Was also a Porterbuilt, just an eairlier one

Decided to spend some time tightning my U-bolts tonight. You will need to invest in a 1-1/16 box end 12 point wrench, Don't buy a 6 point and an open end will not work and sockets are right out! I went to Sears and bought a new one for $21 with tax. When I got home it was a little tight so off to the local pawn shop (a great place to buy tools you need to modify or will only need once). I found one that was a little less bulky and paid $3 no tax, and promptly returned the Craftsman. Now I could cut, grind, bend and modify it any way I wanted.
