Need an opinion
I'm getting ready to build a truck. I have c20 3/4 ton running gear and 1/2 ton running gear.
I want to build a shortbed, fleetside, bagged truck. Should I build it with 1/2 ton running gear or 3/4 ton running gear? I dont care about rims because I'm going custom built either way. Do you think 3/4 ton (8 lug) would hurt the value? |

Re: Need an opinion
If building with resale in mind....I would definitely sell the 3/4 ton stuff and go 5 lug. That being said....if going for resale I wouldn't necessarily bag it....it definitely limits your potential market. If you're building for yourself but still consider selling in the future I'd still recommend 5 lug vs keeping the 8 lug....easier/cheaper to buy parts for (brakes) and will be easier to sell later with the 5 lug components....

Re: Need an opinion
1/2 ton swb all the way...3/4 trucks do not sell very well here in socal.

Re: Need an opinion
build whatever makes you happy...but if you are concerned with resale value, stick with 5 lug.

Re: Need an opinion
Someone who's building an off-road machine will want those 8-lug axles. You could sell them and help finance the project.
For a street truck that's not going to do any heavy hauling, I'd go 1/2 ton. |

Re: Need an opinion
You guys are killin my mojo on the 8 lug thing!!!
I got a few days to make a decision. I think it would be awsome to roll out with somthing a little different from the rest, but I'm afraid It would kill the value. In the end, everything has a price. |

Re: Need an opinion
If you want different, go for it. But different is what you'll end up with. And different can be hard to sell.

Re: Need an opinion
to maximize your resale profit margin sell everything NOW
money is lost in most build cases

And the reason you've seen hybrid 8 lug half tons...is people doing a cheap build....not because they are worth more

This is great feedback and is definatly helping with my decision making. This will be my second 67-72 truck (made money on that one) and just want to keep the build "original" |

Re: Need an opinion
I am building two trucks right now. One is a 70 chev that was a long 6 lug and the other is a 68 GMC 3/4 ton. Both of these trucks will be 5lug 1/2 ton short beds. That seems to be the ones that would be the easist to sell when the time come. Sure people like the 8 luggers and some like the long 1/2tonners as well. That is why we have the different configurations in the first place. I think that more would look at a 1/2 ton 5 lug swb and that is why I am building this way. The gmc is cool wood floor, factory air power steering brake speed warning and buddy bucket with a bigblock. I am makig it a coil spring rear short and I have added tach/vac and tilt steering. Now that sounds like something someone would want. I don't know how limited your market will be with the bag stuff but there is someone for every machine. Good luck with your build

Re: Need an opinion
This was my last truck and a few others I have done over the years. I have a hard time leaving them stock. The build is the fun part for me, after that i'm always looking for the next rush. I think I need an intervention!!
