Speedometer w/ Trip Meter

Anybody know if GM offered a cable-driven speedometer with a trip meter?

The speedo in my '84 is going bad and I'd like to replace it with a trip-meter equipped unit if possible.

Were those still cable driven? For some reason, I thought they all went electronic with the introduction of TBI.

I know the speedo on my '84 has that goofy little optical "eye". Do the 88+ speedos still have that?

Yeah. Those are cable driven. The '88 speedo will have exactly the same font as your original speedo; the 89 (and some 90 2wd) will have more hash marks between the numbers. The electric speedo came about with the change to the 4L80E (I think). The early TBI used the same VSS that you have that utilized the light pulses reflecting from the back of the speedometer drum.

Re: Speedometer w/ Trip Meter

I *think* when they switched to the electronic speedometer they also switched to 6 digit odometer plus the tenth. 88 and 89 R and V trucks plus the K5's had the option of a trip meter and were still 5 digit odometer plus the tenth. I know the speedo in my 87 R10 is from an 89 Suburban and it has a trip meter and 5 digit odometer.

I think that the high beam on the 88-89 are a single, blue dot vs. a dual dot on the older ones. There is the little "eye" on the back as well that is used for your cruise and for later years, speed pulse for the computer.

90 and 91 are electronic and can be identified easily with the additional hash marks between the numbers. It should also say "Quartz" on the face too.

I converted my 89' cable driven to a 91' electric. Here are the two side by side....
