What did I get myself into this time?

I picked this baby up last weekend. My plan was to restore it and paint it to match the rest of my towing fleet. I want to do a "hot rod" wrecker for advertising and local shows but this one is in VERY rough shape.

This is a picture of "Maddy". This one the original owner of the company had built. He kept it when I bought the company from him. The other pic is some of my other trucks.

Re: What did I get myself into this time?

Ok, It will be awhile before I get to the truck. Can you guys give me any ideas that would speed up the restoration? I was thinking 87-91 fuel injected 1 ton disc chassis with 67-72 sheet metal and refurbish the 440 Holmes unit that is pictured. Has anyone done that? Would getting the body on the newer chassis be a nightmare? Any help/Ideas would be GREAT!

Sounds good. It might be easier to swap the drivetrain and suspension into your frame, it should mostly bolt up.
I'm running a TBI on my 454 and I like it.

So I can take the front crossmember and everything out of a newer one and put it on my frame?

Re: What did I get myself into this time?

Get a front suspension and get it all restored and painted ready to install. Get your fuel injected engine all ready to go with wiring harness and all. Find your wheels and get them ready to go with new tires and lugnuts. Get an extra seat and have it recovered and ready to go. Order all of your new interior parts and exterior trim. Get a new Chevy front clip ready to go to replace the GMC clip.

Then, when you get the truck, swap everything over real quick.

I did plan on doing a Chevy front end swap. I might even try to find a a complete pickup cheap and use the cab and clip. mine is pretty far gone. I will get some more pics for you all.

To say that thing is a little rough is like saying I'm a little bit ugly... Good luck, man! That thing needs only one thing to be perfect... another tow truck to tow it away!!

Why change the clip? GMCs need love too. I'd hose it out and run the dog $$it out of it.

I was just bored and decided to go fishing with that front clip comment. It took 45 hours before anyone responded to it. This place is getting slow. 5 years ago if I popped off about axing a GMC clip for a Chevy clip, they'd have run me out of here on a rail.

Re: What did I get myself into this time?

Cool truck, I love wreckers. I would love to have a 69/70 Chevy wrecker with a wheel lift on it some day. If I ever got into towing, I would also like to have a GMC rollback. It would be neat having a business with two 67-72 trucks.

Re: What did I get myself into this time?

I love old tow trucks especially GM ones. If you are ever in Chattanooga Tenn you should check out the tow truck museum . It is very nice and always changing . They also have a wall of fame for fallen towers and display cases of toy tow rigs.
