Decided to step notch my frame and more

Decided to just get my rear level with the front. Frame rails are 2x4x3/16, wanted abit heaver so it would ride better. Trailing arms are 2x2x1/4 with adjustable bushings.
Rusty driveshaft is just for mock up right now, pulled from a junkyard since I needed a smaller diameter.
Everything will be fully welded, grinded and smoothed before painting.

I like the speed holes. My advice though would be to use them sparingly, dont go crazy with too many, everywhere...

What are you using for a trailing arm? They look pretty small.

Re: Decided to step notch my frame and more

Man you do good work, fabrication and painting looks awesome.

I wanted to mention that the strength of the 2" x 2" x 1/4" trailing arms is marginal.

The analysis I ran is based on the air bag seeing a 1500# load (the approximate weight of the truck at the rear axle). This assumes all the weight on one bag (realistic shock loading from pot holes, speed bumps, etc.).

Safety Factor for the 2 x 2 x ¼” tubing is 0.86.

In comparison, a stock trailing arm Safety Factor, also using 1500#, is 3.0.

I don’t want to be a “buzz kill” but felt compelled to mention this.

If the air bag wasn't monted on the 2" tubing it would be just fine as a ladder bar, the weight on top of such a relatively small section height structural member is the problem.

What your using it for should work, just watch since they are mounted off to the side that they dont start to bend too much.

...and btw, it looks awesome painted!!

Just trying to help ya and others here on the board too.

I'd rather say something so you can keep an eye on it, as opposed to it failing and leaving you scratchin' your head along the highway somewhere.

There are also a lot of fabricators on our site that base there future or current builds on what they see here, this allows them to consider using something more substantial than the 2" x 2" x 1/4".

Sorry if my post offended you.

↑↑↑ I think it was a very valid point to make, don't feel bad about what you said, it's just the truth. I've seen you make comments like that before and it's helped others out!

Re: Decided to step notch my frame and more

Is the frame painted from the cab forward? If so you should put some pics of that too. I'm not a big fan of red, but I like the way that looks!
