ball joint brand discussion
ok, i am looking to find some good balljoints for a vehicle that i have that needs them replaced asap, and i want either moog or trw, and in alot of cases i am seeing mcquay-norris part numbers being same numbers as moog, excpet for the final digit of the number.
trw numbers seem to be totally different number, which i expect to happen, who knows what brands have merged with what brands and who makes what these days ? i cant get trw or moog in town, napa and autozone are laughing at me and act like im stupif for wanting other than what they have in stock(mcquay), all i can find are trw ones, in springfield at western auto, and thats all thats there even,,, is trw even worth a damn ? price seems low on them, get what you pay for you know,,, i plan on keeping this vehicle i am replacing them on, so,,,,, help ? thanks, |

Put trw on my 68 and havent had any problems. (7 years ago)
The only problem these days is more and more companies are having the same manufacture make things then just haveing them boxed up in the packaging they want. If any of the parts are made overseas then there is a high chance of this actually taking place.

When I had my suspension modified (2/5/4-inch drop), I used all NAPA components to replace all four ball joints and the upper and lower control arm shafts and bushings. Following a good alignment, everything went back to original specs and I have not had any problems.
Like you said, there have been mergers and acquisitions that make it difficult to know who makes and sells what you're looking for. If it is American-made, it's good enough for me. I don't mean to dis our Northern neighbors, I'm just not in the mood for Taiwanese, VietNamese or other Far Eastern components. I don't want to dis them, either. I just know what I like...besides, I spent my money over there, when I was stationed over there for 21 months. Now, I live here, so I buy here.

I recently priced out front-end parts, and looked around for kits and different options. I found that Moog was the most cost effective and comprehensive for everything I need.
I had a similar experience that you had with Napa. Those idiots didn't even act like they wanted to sell me anything let alone try to work on putting a kit together. Plus, they were expensive as hell! They wanted $87 for just a ball joint! The laundry list came close to $900 (I need everything including an idler and pitman). Moog came to $600-$650. Needless to say I went with Moog. Honestly, Randy, it depends on what kind of vehicle as well. The 1/2 ton parts are cheaper than the 3/4 ton parts for obvious reasons. The manual steering components are sometimes more expensive than power (excluding the gear box of course). Also, if you're working with a car (you didn't actually say you were talking about a truck) you might want to look into PST (Performance Suspension Technology - www.p-s-t.com). They have car stuff for reasonable prices, but I couldn't get them to tell me who made the parts, so I skipped out on them. Good luck.

I rebuilt the front end of my 68 with Car Quest parts. Moog, I believe...it's been a year and a half. The joints are top notch. The rubber boots suck. I will not buy any more of this stuff. Anyone know if poly boots are available for our trucks?

we dotn hav parts stores here cept for AZ and NAPA and a parts Plus, none of them have or can get moog, spingfield has a westerna auto, cant find any car quest, they have trw, thats best i have found so far, will have to go through p-s-t or summit or something, its hard to get alot of normal parts in this region, unless you have a tractor or diesel, are tons of stores for those things... who in thew F wants a driveline and yoke for a tractor ? they stock all kinds on the shelves, and all kinds of farm stuff that i never knew existed,,.

Try here
hell Randy if you're going to have them shipped then try this: http://www.carquest.com/
They've got to be cheaper than Summit or Jeggs for front end parts.

I put new ball joints on the left side of my blazer and they wore out in 1 1/2 years. They were Moog. The parts store owner couldn't believe me. So i took him the old ones ,being careful not to damage them when i took them out, and he gave me two more. We'll see how long they last. The passenger side is original and still good. They told me that TRW is buying up all the parts suppliers, and soon it will all be TRW.
Randy

Carquest is made by Moog but the Moog parts are parkerized so they don't rust. I have both on my shelf. The Moogs are going in and the Carquest I have as spares.

I found out that Auto Specitaly has bought out TRW. So I dunno if it's happened yet, but a place that sells A. S., should be selling TRW.
