Re: 5 speed or auto
If the choice was only TH350 or TH400 I'd prolly leave it a 5 speed......But considering the fine trac record for the 4 speed autos and how much power a build one can handle, I'd have to drink heavily for weeks of worry before choosing cause a good auto sure is convenient and easy to live with, just not as much fun as rowin with a 5 speed.....

Re: 5 speed or auto
I like auto cuz I'm too lazy and I drive mostly in town. As for hot rods having 3 pedals-

Re: 5 speed or auto
If you want to keep it old school go manual. The sound of dual pipes while grabbing gears full throttle or a pair of glasspacks popping and snarling on a long deceleration is the best in my book. But, if you want versatility and mabey a spare rig for the wife and kids to drive, a good auto would be wise. My wife can't drive manuals so therefore can't drive my Chevys. Good thing or bad thing... I'm not saying.

Re: 5 speed or auto
If you are going auto, go with the 700r4. You will want that 4th gear.

Re: 5 speed or auto
I went back and forth myself but my heart was saying standard shift and so I went with my heart and just purchased a TKO500 for my truck. Ultimately it will have a healthy 350 backed by the Tremec with the exhaust exiting through a pair of Brockman Mellow Tone steel packs.

Re: 5 speed or auto
Personally, I prefer to shift 'em myself. So I'd stick with the 5-speed.
But it's your truck. Set it up the way YOU would want it. |

Re: 5 speed or auto
I'd be happy with even a four-speed manual but I think that the column shifter is an important part of the early 60's C10 experience. I don't want to mess up that nice expanse of almost flat foor either
But really, as has been mentioned, making the truck "yours" is most important. Have it your way! ...ned.

Re: 5 speed or auto
I put a camaro t-5 in mine with an s10 tailstock swap and short throw shifter. It works great and is a lot of fun to drive. Took very little modifications to install. Runs about 1900rpm at 50mph with 373 rear gears. If its a daily driver I'd go with automatic because nobody likes clutching through traffic. But being a Sunday driver, manual all the way!

Re: 5 speed or auto
I really like the fun of the 5-speed but I do a hell of a lot of highway cruising and I'm lazy so the 700r4 gets my vote.
