Rear end /front end
hey all since search is disable, does anyone know the link to idendity what type of rear end i have....prob common has 10 bolt pattern and is round in the read and up front 10 bots and well from what i have seen is a dana 60...i can't get any numbers off the axels cause of the undercoating (really don't want to scrape it off)

Colorado k-5 has a very nice and detailed print out sheet for all the axle option's in blazer/truck's.

thanks....... is there anyway to tell the gear ratio without opening it up......gonna have to soon to replace gaskets and change oil out.

Most likely 4.10 or 4.56. Stock would have been 4.10 unless it is a camper special or ordered otherwise and then it would show the ratio in the glove box sheet. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

thanks, its a 72 chassie and 70 cab.... so options are incorrect...Wes any luck on the rear disk brakes for a 3/4 ton 4*4. I called bout a week 2 weeks ago.

It's a D44. I can almost make out the 44 casting in the pumpkin on one of your pics. Additionally, D60's do not use u-bolts but have studs to mount the spring.
Look on that little metal tag on that cover bolt. It should have the ratio.

yeah i looked at it a lil closer its a 44-5F on the tag there are 2 sets of #'s the top i can't make out the bottom is 4-09 is that a correct ratio?

4:09 would be correct. That means that you should have 4:10's in the rear. For some reason it is a design feature to have the front wheel(s) turning slighty slower than the rears.

Actually, the ratio is a function of the size of the ring and pinion, the case, and other paramters. You cannot get all ratios in all style housings because of those things. Later model trucks with 8.5" 10 bolts have 4.10 in the front, but the Dana works out to 4.09. What it boils down to is that the gear ratio is at least as close as the tire discrepancies height wise. In order to get any net pull of the front over the back like some mud runners do, you would need several percentage points difference. Like 3.90 in front and 4.10 in the rear. But don't do that on the street!

alright thanks guys mucho help.. now i gotta figure out how to get better traction on ICE really don't want to go with studded or chains so i suppose i am up ship creek. Willl posi help at all or any lockers (not sure on what these actually do for winter time). If posi will work better what is involved just chaning out the carriers front and back with new ring and pinion?

shoot also what ratio is good for the road and a lil speed i can do bout 75mph at 4500rpm from what i remember before spedo went out..just use rmp gage now 15-20 seems to be 25-30mph in 3rd gear and 15 is 15mph in second.

Thats a great looking truck ............ I am the process of restoring my 72 K20 and was hoping you could possibly post a picture of the emergency Brake cable hangers where it runs from the equalizer to the passenger side and then down the frame the owner before me has it run with plastic ties........thanks

here is a diagram out of LMC and some pics from what i have hooked up. I e-brake will only go about one ta two clicks on the pedal so not sure what else i need to do ta get it to work right.
