I would suggest having a good shop do it. Be aware that you are going to have to purchase a different gear housing because the 4.56:1 unit will not accept any gear ratio smaller (higher) than 4.10:1.
Good luck! |

I concur. The 60 uses shims behind the carrier bearings, and everytime you make a change to backlash, the side bearings have to be removed to swap shims. The early 60's (before the 1980's) are supposed to be set up using a case spreader to apply sufficient preload to the carrier bearings.
To do the job right requires $1000 worth of tools and I would suggest a little experience.

I have one in my '72 (3.54:1's) and the original 4.10's in my Superbee (also a Dana "60") and I rebuilt it completely when I restored the car. I have done several carriers in the past but as stated, you need a "case spreader" so you can drop the spool out of it. So I highly suggest taking it to a reputable builder. I am sure there are some in the Chicago area close to you.

I paid $300 to have my open 3.54 changed out to a posi and I supplied the parts. I have heard stories that you can find someone to do it for 200.
