Unhappy name that noise!

its in my rear end, its wholing or however you spell it when you let off the gas? just replaced u joints and hanger bearing what else? rear end bad? can i just replace parts not the whole thing? thanks

"Howling" is the word I think you wanted. I am no differential expert, but it sounds like your ring and pinion are not aligned correctly. It could be worn out or it might just need shimming. It is probably cheaper to swap out the rear than to fix it, but then you could be buying more problems. Try to find an expert to take a look.
The easy thing for you to do is pull the differential cover and take a look for yourself. Look for metal shavings, worn gears, and rust pits on the gears. It's a start.

this is probably a stupid question, but you dont have knobby mud tires do you? they will roar like everything, and you might not hear it because the sound of the truck during acceleration

Yeah, that howling comes from wear in the differential. I've had it in my last several trucks. Only one of them went out but it howled BAD for three years and 80,000 miles before it cratered. Have an expert check it out, or just turn up the radio. LOL

defeintly not tires, it gets weird sounding when you let off the gas like REALLY loud then kinda dies off, then not howling when gas on, id like a good rear end just to throw in it, or rebuild mine?

mine howled then I put in straight lucas hub oil quieted it down. I had a guy tell me it was a worn pinion gear

new info, haha .. whenever i go around a corner it makes the noise the worst in thinking maybe bearing? or howabout the transfer case? anything go wrong in there? thanks alot

Somewhat of an easy test, At around 25-30mph turn left, then right. If the noise is loudest when your turn right, the left bearing has a problem. If the noise is loudest when you turn left, the right bearing has a problem.

If you getting alot of howling from the rearend only on coast or decel, thats basicly the sounds of a worn rear-end. Its a combination of bearing (differential carrier and pinion) and gear wear creating too much backlash between the gears.
Bearings typicaly make a rythmic growning sound that comes and goes. The backlash problem just creates a loud howl that stays constant and is related to speed.

You if you catch it quick enough you can have someone that is experienced with differentials, replace all the bearings and check the teeth wear pattern.

the gear lube is full, its loud at coast, and at turning, maybe ill have a expert in town look at it thanks alot for your help guys!

very similar problem with my truck.... sometimes it "clunks" when shifting from park to reverse....kinda hops forward after shifting into drive ...... how long do you think i have before it goes ???
very smooth shift between drive, L1 and L2..... ive found it clunks less when i move it from park to nuetral and then into reverse instead of just park to reverse.....does that make sense ?? any input on the subject would be great
