Power steering and power brakes
Ok, guys I have a question that is probably a popular one. I am a newbie here and a new owner of a rusty minnesota '72 chevy pickup. I need to know what junkyard parts I need to scavenge to add power brakes and power steering to my '72. I guess that the 72's already have front disc brakes. Also , it is a 307 2 barrel longbox . Anyone know anything about the 307's ? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Power steering and power brakes
A '73 & up complete crossmember will bolt up by elongating one hole. Your question has been covered a bazillion and 1 times and if you do a search you'll have more info than you care to have. Again, try a search on the 307's. An interesting note is that someone here was considering doing a stroker 307. Lot's of talk on that post but no one has yet done it that I'm aware of.

Re: Power steering and power brakes
All you should have to do on the power brakes is add the booster, brackets, and linkage to the master cylinder you already have. Power steering will require the pump, brackets, lines, and box.
You do not have to completely tear the truck up changing crossmembers and suspension, etc. The 307 was the "smogger" econo-V8 for that era; more power than a 6 but less than a 350 (of course). I intend to junk mine when I get the chance.

Re: Power steering and power brakes
If I remember right, the 307 has a 283 bore with a 327 stroke. Not a bad motor for a semi-economical daily driver, but there are better choices for hot rodding. My.02

Re: Power steering and power brakes
Oops, I read that as disk brakes. 69TowRig is right.

Re: Power steering and power brakes
A whole lot of trucks out there ran just fine for a long time with a 307. Headers, mild cam, intake swap and a newer set of Vortec heads and it would surprise you. Piston choice is the only limiting factor with one.
Its still a small block chevy and the people who claim the 307 is useless have never stopped to think about it . Although its not necessarily a cheap re-build --- they all cost about the same, and 307 pistons may be a bit higher to boot if you have to go all the way with it. The 307 in my '69 with a Holley 600 and aluminum corvette intake , rams horn manifolds and duals, made enough power to keep me in constant trouble with the local constables and have fun racing stoplight to stoplight on cruise night. The 307 is one of those motors that performs big on the street and doesnt do anything on the dyno Last edited by streetstar; 08-27-2007 at 01:39 AM. |
