Posi with 3:73 - will this work?
I bought this posi on ebay. I was expecting the clutch type posi but have something I haven't seen before. The add said it was for a 12 bolt truck diff. Can someone help me out and tell me what I bought?
I have it going in my 67 SWB which currently has a 3:07 open diff. Last edited by hemihead; 08-23-2007 at 11:06 PM. |

That looks like a no-spin rear. Also referred to as a gov-bomb.

Its A Eaton Gov Lock And It Will Do Fine Unless You Jerk It Around All The Time. They Get A Bad Rep Cause You Cant Beat Them To Death. Good Driver Quality Diff.

My 67 is a daily driver, back to forth to work, town trips, and the odd road trip. It might see the odd burn out and launch but thats about it. Paid $122 shipped with the 3:73 gear set.
Should I keep or resell and see if I can get my hands on a clutch type posi? |

This is yet another one of the on-going sagas with the wrongful use of the word "posi". Posi is an Eaton trademark, always has been, for their clutch-type limited slip differentials. I think in the world of automotive nomenclature the word "posi" is one of the most generalized and most time incorrectly used of all time. My own brother refers to "posis" as the two-tracks left by his Chevelle on asphalt after he prods the gas pedal.

Re: Posi with 3:73 - will this work?
Thanks for the comments, I have since dropped the truck and re-wired the truck with a Painless kit.
Thinking about 700r tranny this winter and getting rid of the drums for discs with power brakes. So since I will be in the rear end I will get rid of the 3.07 open carrier and put in the 3.73 gov lock. The current T350 seems to only hold rpm to 3000 and then shift so it definitely needs a rebuild. The cab has some minor rust issues which need attentin but that will likely be the last thing I touch. |
