Unusual rear bumper - what is it?

Noob here. I have an unusual rear bumper on my 71 C20. I have seen a pic of one before, but I can't find it back. Can anyone tell me if it was factory, aftermarket, or what it is for? I like it, as it lets the tailgate drop all the way down. This is helpful when I get pallets of things from the feed store. It is getting bad, and I wouldn't mind getting it replaced.

Thanks!

Never seen one like it myself but I can see how it would be handy if you used your truck a lot

Re: Unusual rear bumper - what is it?

I have seen this style on the 1960-1966 Chevy pickups also. As you said, it allows the user to drop the tail gate straight down. It was very popular with cattle ranchers. Easier to load and unload those heavy hay bales for feedin' time.

Re: Unusual rear bumper - what is it?

These were pretty common in some western states. They never made any sense at all to me. It's like you only back into things with your corners? Ok,for a step, you can only use the corner when the tailgate's down...that makes sense. For a bumper, why do all that work to recess the center when leaving it straight across protects the tailgate. And,people climb over the tailgate, too,so leave the step across the center.

How much you want to bet that is for a dump bed or a lift gate.

Re: Unusual rear bumper - what is it?

I've seen quite a few of those bumpers around this area but mostly on stepsides. I had one for an 8ft stepside that was called a Longhorn..it wrapped all the way around to the end of the rear fender opening..they also made a shorthorn.

Heres a pic from the 68 Silver book of one manufacture..there were several making this style bumper.

Interesting ... I'm always impressed when someone posts vintage ads to support the case.

I wondered if this one wasn't for a stepside or some more narrow vehicle. The ends where they come around the side of the bed have dented the sheet metal in. It doesn't look like there is a way to adjust the bumper to clear it any better. Thanks for the catalog picture, that is super cool!

Re: Unusual rear bumper - what is it?

I've had that bumper on a couple trucks, as said it's so you can drop the gate out of the way.

Re: Unusual rear bumper - what is it?

Our red 66 has one, im not sure if any of our 67-72s have it, but I know my dads 73 or 74 had one also. From what I understood it was to drop the tailgate all the way down.

Re: Unusual rear bumper - what is it?

I've been wondering why those bumpers were made that way for a long, long time. Now I finally know!

Re: Unusual rear bumper - what is it?

Some of you may be too young to know that bumpers (on the back) used to be optional. If you're still older, then you'll recall that any bumper used to be optional, as were shock absorbers, heaters, side windows, etc.

Times have changed.

Was looking at my 71 yesterday and realized it has a modified version of one of these bumpers.
