Ho52 axle seal or axle shaft flange gasket?
Hey guys I was driving my truck today and this happened. Not sure if I need to pull the hub off and replace the seal or is it just the axle shaft flange metal gasket? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

It looks like the axle gasket. I don't see any oil puddling up on the back of your rims.

Re: Ho52 axle seal or axle shaft flange gasket?
This from the '69 Service Manual may help, too.
"To prevent lubricant from leaking through flange holes, apply a non-hardening sealer (such as Permatex Type A or equivalent) to bolt threads. Use care in the amount of sealer applied, as in too heavy an application, the sealer may be forced out as the bolt is installed and may destroy the sealing effect of the flange-to-hub gasket".

Thanks for the info. I did forget to do the thread sealer when I did the brake service. I'll be sure to pick some up along with the gasket.

Use the Grey silicone Permatex that's made for differentials, it resists gear lube.

Re: Ho52 axle seal or axle shaft flange gasket?
^ Yes -- it's good stuff, far better than RTV silicone when gear oil is involved. Part no. 81182.

^ Didn't know there was such a product. I'll try it next time.
