What engine do I have
All, what is the best way to tell if I have a 216 or a 235 or something else in my 49 Chevy Pickup? Serial number has been ground off for some reason and I want to make sure I'm ordering correct parts to get it rebuilt.

Re: What engine do I have
Check the casting number on the block. This should provide date code information. Also look at the valve cover and how it is attached. 235's (at least mine) have screws that fasten through the flange of the valve cover. I think 216's have fasteners through the top of the valve cover.
Someone with a 216 should chime in soon |

Some early 235 also have center bolt valve covers that look like 216's |

Re: What engine do I have
If your lifter cover goes up past the spark plugs you have 216. If it stops below the plugs 235. The pic is a 216 cover

Re: What engine do I have
Looks like I have a 216 based on Daves lifter cover description. Thanks all. Pat
