dual snorkel air cleaner how to.

I already now it has been done and there is another thread on the site that shows pics but I thought I would share the pictures and what I used to make it for anyone who wants to do it themselves. A buddy of mine just built a 383 for his 72 C/10 and wants to make it look stockish and wondered if I would build him one so here is how I did it. There are probably a million ways to do it and different tools to use but these are the ones I used to get to my end result.

Parts list: two air cleaners you don't mind cutting up.

Tool list: drill, cut off wheel, 1/8 inch drill bit, 1 & 1/2 inch hole saw, wire wheel, a vise if you have one, mig welder, die grinder with a carbide bit, vise grips, small screw driver or chisel, and a small hammer.

I started by putting the worst of the two air cleaners in a vise. I then put the 1/8th inch drill bit in the drill and slowly drilled out the factory spot welds. There is one on each corner or 4 total.

After drilling I used a small screw driver and a hammer to lightly pry up the air horn from the air cleaner.

I then drilled out the two spot welds that hold the heat valve to the air horn. I also used the screw driver and hammer to help remove this on both air horns. (This is optional but he wanted it to be smooth.) After breaking the valve loose I wiggled it around to unhook the rod from the flap inside of the air horn and removed the valve all together. I then cut off the end of the rod that runs from either side and pulled it through to remove the valve from within.

After all of the the removal of parts on the air horn I mocked up the general location to make sure all was right and it would work.

Re: dual snorkel air cleaner how to.

I then removed the clamped on air horn and I cut off the heat riser tube (optional) on both air horns to allow more air in and cleaned it up with a grinder and file.

I then went to the first air cleaner and cut out the flange so it could be utilized in the second base so that there would not be any gaps and look factory from the outside. I cut it 2 inches on both sides and at the bottom and top as far as I could. I drilled four 1/8th inch holes in the flange for spot welds to secure it the the air cleaner. One in each corner. I then set it aside for later.

I moved on to where I decided I would put the snorkeld on air cleaner #2 and measured it out. I used a 1 and a 1/2 inch hole saw on both ends of the measurement and a cut off wheel to connect the two. I then used to die grinder with the carbide bur to modify the opening to slip the flange from air cleaner #1 into air cleaner #2.

I then slipped the flange in from the inside of the air cleaner. I took the air horn and fitted it over the flange to make sure everything was level and symetrical to the other air horn. After I had it where I wanted it I used vise grips to secure it while I spot welded it.

Re: dual snorkel air cleaner how to.

I then refitted the air horn over the flange and spot welded it as well. I used the die grinder and carbide bur to smooth out the welds since they where in a tight area.

This is how I did mine and like I said there are probably easier ways out there but if you have a few hours to kill and have the parts it is very easy.

I will be welding up all of the holes and then sand blasting it. After that I will put some putty on the air horns and smoothing them out. I will follow it up with some semi gloss black on then it will go to its new home.

Re: dual snorkel air cleaner how to.

Thanks fellas. I will be putting a later model lid on it so that we can fit a 4 inch filter under in it.

Here is the engine it will be going on.

383 with flat tops, Dart heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM, and Comp Cams 292 magnum .501/.501 with 244 degrees at .050 and 110 lobe seperation. It oughta run and sound pretty good.

Been planning one of these for a while now. I just have to cross off the 994 things on the list before it!

Re: dual snorkel air cleaner how to.

Thanks guys. I made this one for a friend using my last two air cleaners I had. Now that I see the results I need to find two more to build one for myself . I will post pictures after it is finished and painted and in the truck.

Re: dual snorkel air cleaner how to.

I just got a lid today. It is off of a 72 Monte Carlo so it isn't as tall but I can still fit a 3" filter under it. I wanted a TBI lid because they have a 4" filter.

Re: dual snorkel air cleaner how to.

Question ? Would 2nd horn increase heat to carb if you had both connected to the vacume controller ? Like two heat risers off both manifolds open to warm up then close off when warm . IT IS COLD IN OREGON !

I would think it would increase heat to the carb. You would have a riser off of both manifolds but I think you would have to space the snorkels out a little farther than I did to make it work easiest. I didn't worry about it because this is a fair weather truck so I cut the riser ports off and it is just a big hole there now for more air.
