In cab gas tank?
Anybody know how to get rid of the gas smell inside the cab? I have no leaks, and a new gas tank rubber hose with new clamps. I did buy a new vented gas cap. Maybe I need an unvented gas cap. I have just finished a frame off restoration and I never drove the truck before the restoration, so I do not know if it smelled before. the orginal gas tank was in great shape, so I just repainted it.

Forgot to tell this, it also give me a powerful "whoosh" whenever I remove the gas cap.

Re: In cab gas tank?
Sounds like your vented cap isn't vented very well. Have you tried driving it without the cap tight? I could be wrong though I haven't conferred with my wife on this

Re: In cab gas tank?
Mine did this too until I got a vented gas cap. Just order a new gas cap.

Re: In cab gas tank?
Make sure you have the correct cap, then if you have a new sender gasket and hose already, make sure you put sealant on the sender bolt threads. That's where mine was leaking and smelling. I sealed the sender screws and now its ok.
Good luck )bone(

Re: In cab gas tank?
My screws are leaken also. I just picked up some fiber washers today but haven't put em on yet. what sealant did ya use. These in cab tanks are a real pain to get squared away.

Re: In cab gas tank?
I just used the 3m? white pipe thread sealant. You just need a dab on each screw thread. good luck

Re: In cab gas tank?
update on the screws: probably off thread here but I found two screws that did not have the factory washers on em. I put the pipe dope on anyway but there is suppose to be a fiber washer on them.

Re: In cab gas tank?
The folks above nailed it on the head. Make sure the rubber gasket between the tank and sender is good also. As mentioned above the filler neck hose probably needs replaced and vented cap.
Also not a bad idea to check the sending unit to under cab line to make sure its not leaking there.

Re: In cab gas tank?
I replaced the cap yesterday, now I do not get the pressure buildup as before and my shop does not stink of gas. Either I had a bad cap or it was not a vented cap. Thanks a lot for everybodys help.

Re: In cab gas tank?
I also had problems with getting the sending unit to seal. I went to an airport and got some B2 sealer, which is what they use to seal aircraft senders, and no more smell! Now if you ride with your window open and have a vented cap you might get a whiff every now and then, roll up window and nothing.

Re: In cab gas tank?
I ordered a cap listed for the truck but it also pressurized like you describe so obviously not the right listing. Air could come in but not out. Over sitting for the winter and with the warm cold cycles it also sent gas past the carb and into the oil. I fixed it by drilling a vent hole just inside the rubber gasket.

Re: In cab gas tank?
Check and make sure your gas cap seals tightly to the filler neck. The aftermarket gas cap on my '68 slowly over a period of a couple years deteriorated, cracked and split causing this same issue. I just yesterday replaced it with a new cap, put 10 gallons of gas in this afternoon and no more gas shloshing out of the cap on right turns.

Re: In cab gas tank?
i too have a strong fuel smell in the cab if i roll my window down after driving for a little while the fumes get worse and worse. when i crack open the fuel cap lots of pressure releases.
I assumes my problem is coming from the new FiTech fuel injection we just added? no smell coming from inside the cab i don't think do i need to get a more modern cap from a fuel injected vehicle? The tank, hose, sending unit are all new by the way

Re: In cab gas tank?
It sounds like you need a vented cap instead of a non-vented cap.
