Anyone know if a `72 350 engine has the nylon timing gear? The 72 I had with a 307 had the nylon gear and it flew apart at about 160,000 miles. I have about 145 thou. on this motor and I`m wondering if I should be thinking abouy changing the chain and gears. THANKS

Shotgun it. If it ain't noisy, it's probably nylon and getting ready to go south. Even if the gear is still good, the chain probably needs a rest.
I think you have to pull the front edge of the oil pan down to remove the timing cover, so it won't be quite as much fun as it could be...

If you have 145k on the engine yse I would replace the timming chane. You can pick up a double roller chain pretty cheapand you will not have to worry about the oil pump locking up from the nylon chain.

Do it. Hell, the nylon gear on my '70 let go at 90k or so.

I've seen them go at 60K, I recomend tossing it.

Some chevy gears that ive dealt with were just coated in nylon while other were nylon. Or in the case of my 77 chevy the 400 had steel gears (i was the first person to change the timing set). I would recommend changing it every 100 000 miles but i am also cheap and sometimes lazy

Thanks guys you talked me into it. When mine let go in the old 307 it bent some push rods and turned into a real job.I guess this is a case where you should fix something that isn`t broken...(yet). THANKS
