Rear main seal help
Hi guys,going to redo the rear main seal on my 78 350 for the 2nd time,trying to fix the oil leak,I forgot to clean the end of crankshaft last time,so it started leaking again,any tips on how to get a good seal?

First, are you sure that it is the main seal, or just the pan gasket?
If it is indeed the seal, there are a few things that will help. Start with "off setting" the seal slightly, so the the seal ends are not flush with the block, then do the same in the cap. Then put just a dab of silicone on the ends of the seal before assembly. Also, wipe a bit of oil on the sealing lip of the seal before putting the cap back on. Be absolutely sure that the block and cap are clean, no burrs, gasket crumbs, silicone chunks, etc That's really all there is to it, other than checking the pan too. Be sure that it is flat and smooth, no dimples around the bolt holes
