I was thinking of coating my wood strips with bed liner and adding the stainless strips back onto the truck. The previous owner put in new wood (poorly finished and left out the ss strips. The interesting part is that without the ss strips and no tonneau cover, the rain, snow etc. just drains out. I was wondering since I'm not going to put a cover over it, if I should cut the ss strips shorter so as to allow the water etc. to drain.
Any thoughts?

those beds with the wood are far from water tight....I think you can put the strips in and have no fear of the water not draining.....jmho......

I'm not following what you mean by cutting the ss strips shorter. What would that do?

If the bed is clean, they will drain on their own fairly quickly.

most factory wood beds lasted at least 25-30 years, some even longer and they consisted of painted pine slats with painted steel strips.

you'll be fine.
