I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
Some of you may have seen the Chevy pics already. Its a 1972 Chevy C20 long bed with a 350 3 speed automatic. The cab and bed need work but nothing that couldn't be fixed. He wants $650, I might be able to get him down to $500.
I was telling a co-worker about it and he said he has a 1968 GMC 1500 long bed with 307. He said it was a 3 on the tree tranny but has made it into a floor shifter with a hurst shifter. Bed floor is banged up from being used as a farm truck. Rockers are going to need to be replaced. He said everything else is fine. I'm going to check it out this up coming week. He said he'd find out a price(he has to ask his dad)....I'm thinking it will be around the higher hundreds close to a thousand. |

Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
I agree, sounds like you’ll need some parts anyway. I like the GMC just because you don’t see that many.
The thing I don’t like about the GMC you mentioned is the floor is all hacked up. But if you want a stick shift than it won’t matter. But if you want a automatic… than get the Chevy. s/t

Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
I'm sure the floor isn't hacked, the guy and his father have done a lot of cars together and I'm sure its a clean install. He said the rockers are shot though. I'm gonna get some pics this week when I go check it out. He told me he would give me the keys and drive it around for a couple hours to see what I think.
Is the 307 a decent motor. |

Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
man, im getting the itch. wish i could check out that gmc tomorrow. This might be a stupid question....when you bag a truck do you have to do any body work to compensate for the lowering.
im not sure if i want to drop it normally or bag it. which does all of you prefer? |

Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
Just talked to the GMC owner today. He said $600 and it is in good running condition. If it is in good condition I'm not going to haggel the price. Him and his father are good people that I've known for a while. From the way he's described it, it sounds to be in better condition then the Chevy. I'm going to check it out after work and give her a test ride. He says the motor and tranny are good condition and it will still light up the tires. Does anyone know what kind of power(HP & TQ) the stock 307's were putting out?

They are more comparable to the way newer engines are rated. The gross figures are w/o anything attached, and are not "real world" figures. Found this SAE exerpt that I thought was interesting... SAE J245 Engine Rating Code, Spark Ignition Approved April, 1971. Editorial change March, 1973 ... 1.2.1 Gross power is brake power output of a BASIC engine .... 1.2.2 Net power is brake power output of a FULLY EQUIPPED engine .... .. 1.6.1 BASIC engine is an engine equpped only with the built-in accessories essential to it's operation: Fuel pump, oil pump, coolant pump for liquid cooled engines, and built in emissions control equipment. 1.6.2 FULLY EQUIPPED engine is an engine equipped with all the accessories necessary to perform it's intended functions unaided. This includes (but is not restricted) the basic engine of 1.6.1 plus the intake air system, exhaust system, cooling system, generator, starter, and emission control equipment. If these #'s are wrong for the '70 GMC 307, I am not aware. I'm also assuming this was with a 2bbl carb.

Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
I agree with Longhorn Man once again. Don't find too many with beautiful body and pretty faces either.

Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
Here are the pics. I don't think its a bad deal at all for a running driving truck. $600 and as you can see its not much rust. original family owned with original documents.

Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
Grab them both. You never can have to many 67-72's. Trust me. lol I agree I own 2 chevys but the gmc's are really starting to grow on me. I really love seeing the gmc's run around. Heck build the gmc for pleasure and build the 72 for work.

I have a work truck...its a Nissan Frontier. I would love to buy both the 72 and the 68 but i'm kind of sneaking this one under the radar with the wife. i promised no more toy purchases until after tax checks come to pay off current bills. I'm gonna get the 68 as long as its in better condition and if the 72 is still there in a couple of months then i will offer a low ball price and try to get that. I get off work in an hour and get to test drive it woo hoo. oh yeah, i'll also take pics but its getting dark out so not sure how that will turn out. Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
Sounds like the GMC is sounding better now we have more info. I like the GMC’s because you don’t see that many.
Pick all the things you like about each truck and the things you don’t like or need to fix. This will give you a good idea of the one you want. I think the GMC would be my choice. Get some pictures. s/t

Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
Weeeeellllll. heres what I found. A very good condition 70 GMC 1500. The guy I work with is borrowing it off of his dad...who I know and use to work with. His dad got it off of his dad. His dad was original owner so its basically a one family truck. In the glove box on the options sticker was listed one option....you heard it, one option....the trim on the outside of the truck. inside the glove box was the original owners manuel with the originals sale slip with his grand dad's signature.
now to the good stuff. the only rust holes are the rockers and the tailgate. the bed is good and the bed floor is decent with some pitting. the floor is solid and the cab corners are solid. the fenders and battery tray are solid. a decent amount of surface rust but over all a very straight truck. it drives nice and shifts nice and rides nice. brakes good and turns like a manuel steering truck. It's sold as soon as I get him the money which should be a week or two(he won't sell to anyone else, like i said i know them both well). I'll try to get pics soon. I think i'm getting a steal at $600. sorry couldn't get pics, it was night out. Last edited by Thunderace1997; 01-11-2007 at 08:44 PM. |

Re: I have to pick, GMC or Chevy
AW the grill, I remember that, its the handle I can see sticking out of the Glacer I used to call my deck. I want to BBQ.... BTW great find on the truck. that sounds like a nice solid foundation for what ever you want to build.
