speedometer cable
ok, another dumb question: my 68 doesnt have a speedometer cable installed and I dont see where it's supposed to go into the transmission. I wanna verify that the sender/gear thing is there before I order a cable. (dont want to pay for a cable then not have any place to connect it) It's a 68 250 with a 3-speed manual. anybody have a pic? thanks!

Re: speedometer cable
ttt for you...
I have a 3 speed saginaw on mine. Someone probably sealed the cable opening and you need to insure you have the proper parts inside. I'll post a pic of mine with the cable installed tomorrow if no one has one they can post for you. |

Re: speedometer cable
Long time since I worked on mine, but I think it's just below the shift arms.

Re: speedometer cable
yeah, It has a aftermarket floor shifter in it and I found an old thread on here about one of the shift rods being in the way of the speedo cable with a floor shift- so the PO might have removed the speedo cable because of that...

Re: speedometer cable
Mine has a cheap aftermarket shifter, too. Was on there when I got it. I hope you can get the right cable. There are several sizes of those plastic gears, and they aren't cheap.

Re: speedometer cable
can't understand why someone would drive around without a speedometer, but the last time the truck was tagged was in 1997, so who knows why the speedo cable isn't there? lol

Re: speedometer cable
Those aftermarket floor shifters do get in the way... My 69 C-10 project kept breaking cables and needed a 90degree adapter. it should insert on the drivers side about 4-6 inches from the rear of the tranny IIRC.

Re: speedometer cable
Heres the pic in case you still need it. It's a good thing I took a pic. Looks like my cable is leaking.

Re: speedometer cable
Hey Mike, we have a few things in common. . . I am working on my first C-10 after messing with VWs all my life. Last night, I put my Saginaw 3-spped on the workbench to ease the installation of a Hurst Indy floor shifter. I noticed that it allmost covers the speedo drive, but I am hoping that it will clear anyway. I will let you know. BTW, if you remove the speedo drive, you will leak gear oil, so have a pan under the trans!
