Powder Coater Messed Up My Wheels!
I went to the PC shop to save me some time & labor on these. The areas in the center of the wheels ALL built up & looked "splatered". After five weeks, they didn't have them fixed, so I had to just go get them. What a mess!. Had to commercially reblast, torch, scrape & blast again to get most off.
Covered the rough areas with two-part 3M duramix self leveling seam sealer. That stuff is great & tough. See in pics. Painted with E-primer & two part PPG Concept. Nice paint, but way too much work on these. |

Re: Powder Coater Messed Up My Wheels!
My powdercoater said that was common with wheels. Something to do with brake dust.

Re: Powder Coater Messed Up My Wheels!
Those look great Frank. I love the white steel wheel look. I have 8 extra 15x8 6 lug wheels now. Never know when I might need em =)
Good reason to go with paint over powder coat too.

Re: Powder Coater Messed Up My Wheels!
Easy there fellas. Powdercoating is not evil.
Here is what I do, 160 a set for argent with clear... 120 a set for single stage white... Second rate jobs don't leave my shop. If I screw something up, I srip it and re-do it until it is right. It all depends on the man and what kind of work he puts out. I only do 100 percent and not a bit less. My reputation is important to me. Please read my feedback in the review forum. Lots of happy people. Also, my turnaround time for a set of wheels would be anywhere from 2 days to 1 week at the very maximum. I am a custom powdercoater. I do not do production or volume work. People who do volume work tend to scrimp on the needed effort to turn out perfection so they can get them in and out as fast as possible. My point of all of this, is don't hate the powdercoat, hate the second rate bastard that turns out bad work. G'day, Kevin

Re: Powder Coater Messed Up My Wheels!
I was just going to add.....I had a bad powder-coating experience and learned a hard lesson.....don't use any one unless you get a good referral...I picked one close by from the phone book and really regretted it.
Tx Firefighter comes highly recommended, even if it cost extra to ship the parts, the finished product is worth it!

Re: Powder Coater Messed Up My Wheels!
Anyone can mess up a coating job, paint or powdercoat. It can happen to anyone. It`s how you handle your screw up that matters.
Powdercoat isn`t the immaculate coating some like to think it is.It`s great, but not flawless.I`ve had many many parts coated for a few decades and have seen alot.I`ve only used ISPA in Baltimore, who have been industrial coaters since 1947,mostly for Navy,NASA,and specialized high dollar work and Metal Refinishing Systems/Maryland Industrial Coaters/Maryland Perormance Coatings(Ceramics) in Sykesville,MD.They are two of the most experienced coaters there is and there have been mishaps. But,I have never carried a part away I wasn`t satisfied with.Fixing a screw up should be top priority in a reputable business.

Re: Powder Coater Messed Up My Wheels!
On the first pict. Is the white area on the wheel the seam sealer you talked about later in your post? If so I wouldn't expect the power coat to stick to seam sealer. Either way the power coater should stand behind their work.

Re: Powder Coater Messed Up My Wheels!
The first pic shows the left over PC after hours of work to remove it. Notice how smooth the area is after applying the seam sealer. They had to be painted because the PC would never recoat correctly over the left over mess!

Re: Powder Coater Messed Up My Wheels!
I have had TX Firefighter do several things for me...............all top rate work. I especially like my freshly coated Stock Air Cleaner and Tilt Column. Grear work at a great price. I'm lucky, I guess. I finally figured out we only lived 20 miles apart.
