changing seals and bearing in a 308 posi rear

Ok, I have a 308 rear end, that's not a true posi, but it has the springs in it, so I know it's not just an open rear end, but my question is this, how do I release the axels so I can change the bearings and seals on the inside??

Any answers are appreciated and thank you,

Brandon

There is a small bolt that is holding a large pin that goes through the carrier. Remove small bolt (usually parallel with axles), remove large pin (90 perpendicular to axles), push axles inward and remove C-clips that hold them in (inside carrier) then pull axles out. I suggest that you go to the store and buy a Chiltons manual for our trucks.

Re: changing seals and bearing in a 308 posi rear

The C clips should come out in your pics it looks like one side the springs are in tight and the other spread apart they should come out that side, I had a camaro rear axle in my old malibu had a similar posi and the clips only come out one side. My 97' truck is the same way, try using a magnet to keep them in the right position when your pullin them out.

Re: changing seals and bearing in a 308 posi rear

If the springs are the only thing holding you back form getting the axle clips out rotate the carrier 180 degrees. The back side of the carrier you should have access to the c clips on the end of the axles.

Once they are out, just slide the axles shafts out slowly so to not damage the axle bearings.

Sometimes you have to push in on the end of the axle in order to get the clips out.Get a magnet to help pull them out and to reinstall.

Re: changing seals and bearing in a 308 posi rear

That's an Eaton positrac rear end. i just did the same thing on mine. It comes out just like an open carrier but with a little less room. Mine also had shims behind the spider gears that fell out....be sure to get them back where they belong... That entire spring assy can come out but I wouldn't unless you need to. put a bolt through it to squeeze it tight and it will slide right out.

Is there already a hole for the bolt in that spring pack? I need to remove mine to replace the posi clutches/steels.

Re: changing seals and bearing in a 308 posi rear

The service manual shows putting bolts and nut through the springs to compress them... I'll have to pull it out again but pretty sure that's how they show how to service them.
