1987 2wd 350 headers help?!

I just put a set of headers on a 87 gmc r1500 2wd 350/m20. The problem I am having is the driverside collector is pointing right at the tranny crossmember . The original exhaust was driverside only and went up over the crossmember . If I was to cut and weld the collector it wouldn't be enough to get me over the xmember. I can't get a pipe on it to go under it either. Has anyone else had this problem on an 87??

What type headers are you using? Shorties or full length. I have the Edelbrock shorties w/ AIR injection on mine and the only thing that I had to do was to have a smaller size pipe installed because the headerflang was a little smaller than the original manifold flang.

What you need is a dual hump crossmember from a 1 ton truck. Or build your own. A board member made this crossmember for my truck. A dual hump crossmember is almost the same design but stock. Some board members have the dual hump crossmember too.

A good muffler guy can get around the cross member. I have headers on my son's truck (86 Chevy and my truck 84 GMC and with both of them we just angled that side a little to clear the member and then completed the pipimg run. Both trucks are lowered 31/2" and there are no clearance problems.

Did you go over or under the xmember?

We just welded two 3inch turn downs together to make a kick up, it was cheap and it works. No real point in making a custom crossmemeber unless you want to.

I had the same problem with my 76 stepside. The passenger side was the bigger problem. I had a buddy who does exhaust cut the collector flange back about 3 inches and used U-bends to go under the x-member and connect to my existing new 2/1/2" exhaust. The head pipes hang lower than the headers, maybe if I change to a dual hump x-member I can get the pipes up higher.
