Late model rear end?
Has anyone measured a late model 6 lug rear end to see if they would fit a 71 truck frame? Better yet doews anyone have pictures of one installed?
Been wondering how much trouble it would be to put one under a 71 and have the axles done for the 5 on 5 bolt pattern to gain the disc brakes. There is a local junkyard that has several of these rear ends.

Re: Late model rear end?
I recently started to look into this same thing as a friend of mine was going to swap out the rear end on his '06 Tahoe and he asked if I was interested in it. I was interested for the same reasons...disc brakes, 3.73 posi... I figured I could swap the axles to keep my 5 x 5 bolt pattern. Before I got too far into it, he changed his mind.
But my initial findings were that it would probably be a few inches wider. Plus the brackets would all have to be cut off and new ones welded on to match the truck arms. I'm not to far from you, Andy, so if you find out more and it's not unreasonable, maybe we can work a deal for 2! - Matt

Well next time I go to the junkyard I'll get some measurements and look at it some more.

Re: Late model rear end?
I do know that the 88 up rears are wider, not sure about the newer ones with disk brakes. I've seen were guys with 73 up trucks have put them in to match the front axle widths. Hope this helps some, I know glock put one in his Fred build and he mite have some measurements.

Re: Late model rear end?
Well depending on how much wider they are it may help with the tires rubbing I had without the spacer installed. It can come out further in the wheel well and be fine. I guess it's time to make a trip to the junkyard.

Re: Late model rear end?
Don't forget to check the Trailblazer also. They might be the right width. The nice thing about the later axles over installing disc on a stock one would be the better selection of ratios, and thease of finding a posi.
