separating engine from tranny
replacing the engine in my 72 have everything unbolted ready to pull... any magic trick to separating the engine from the tranny? thanks

it's an automatic. never dealt with an auto before always dealt with manuals in the past.

Support the rear of the engine with a jack or a jackstand, remove the bolts in the bell housing. Remove the rear transmission mount. If you can remove the transmission cross member do so but if you can't you'll just have to jack it a bit higher to clear it. The transmission will be hanging off the guide pins in front so raise it up with a trans jack or a trolley jack just enough to remove the pressure on the guide pins and roll it back.

Just one of many ways, I like to take torque converters bolts out and leave converter in trans. Just an option

take a ratchet strap and strap up the trans just in front of the pan hook cherry picker to the engine and take it out

Funny that nobody mentioned about unbolting the torque converter first, then unbolt the bell housing

This is the correct way to do it. Unbolt the torque converter then push the torque converter slightly back towards the transmission. Support the transmission and then unbolt the bellhousing. You may have to pry a little to get it apart, but make sure all the bolts are out first!

Notice 3 torque converter bolt to flex plate holes and supported transmission. Also if it still has the flywheel dust cover on it has to be removed..

I "SEPARATED" my new powerglide from the engine in my '70 Nova a couple of weeks ago. Easy removal, didn't have to mess with those pesky bell housing bolts. Rotated the trans about 30deg. behind the engine on the launch.
