The $160 67 GMC is passing on

Thanks to all! The time is about here to pass the truck on to the boy. He get’s his license next week. I haven’t spent much time chatting here, been too busy building the truck but here’s the short of it. I was driving across the back of my neighbors ranch that I hadn’t been on in many years. That was Memorial Day 2006. I spotted the small back window of a pickup behind an implement shed. I call my neighbor up and ask what it was and how much. He wanted $200, I offered $100….. Yeah I’m tight! It had been parked since 1986, I brought it home for $160, cleaned the trash out of the bed and gave it a bath. This was it then:

I had an 88 Suburban with a blown rear and a 91 Lincoln with a blown engine out back for parts, I used mechanicals, engine, suspension, brakes from the sub and gutted the ford of it’s electrical, cooling fan, fuse center, wires, seats.

And now, here it is today, almost ready to be the boy’s first cruser. Yeah, I’m scared! But I couldn't have done it without all the tips and tricks and info I gleaned from this site! thanks again all of you!

Re: The $160 67 GMC is passing on

Naw.. Thanks for the offer but I have a girl that's a couple of years away from driving... Don't know what I'm gonna do for her... I didn't have much choice on the yellow and black, that's the colors he wanted and rustoleum dosen't have a big selection of colors....

Re: The $160 67 GMC is passing on

I painted it with a Binks #7 spray gun, and I had to fabricate brackets for the seats.

Re: The $160 67 GMC is passing on

Sweet! Man that is beautiful. Nice job. So you painted it with the rustolem enamel. What was your mix ratio- paint to thinner to hardner? What was the flash time between coats? What grit sandpaper did you use before painting? And did you put clear on it? Hope not to many questions. Still sweet ride. Hope your son enjoys it.
Aaron

EDIT: I should have read the post above for paint reduction. Must be getting tired or was it the droll from seeing the truck.

Re: The $160 67 GMC is passing on

Ratio was 50/50 with cheap lacquer thinner, no hardner or clear, it took a few days to dry. Flash time? it was 100+ deg. when I painted it! i think 320 was the finest paper I used.

Re: The $160 67 GMC is passing on

Flash time between coats @ 100+ degrees in the sun with a surface temp of 100+ deg. = paint fast , paint close and heavy to get a flash time of 10-15 seconds.....

Re: The $160 67 GMC is passing on

That is truely awesome... TBI engine + 700r4, rust free, and a newer disk brake front / power steering etc, all done in a quarter of the time it took me to get my truck back running...

Re: The $160 67 GMC is passing on

WOW!

looks good....I'm sure he'll have more chicks that want a ride than he'll know what to do with.

on the Rustoleum - is there a reason that you used Laquer Thinner instead of the Acetone that Rustoleum suggests you use when spraying or reducing thier paint?

the only drawback to using the "NON-Hardender" route is that if you ever have to sand it back out it might give you a problem - just pray you don't ever have to sand it out again.
