Got a '68 GMC..is it a longhorn?

Ok...so we got in a '68 GMC today...are they considered Longhorns? Don't know much about the GMC's...it's 6 lug, pretty sure just a half ton...but it's in pretty nice shape, someone took care of it. Right now she has no spark..so we are going to trace it down & more than likely change the distributor...or the coil...it's got a 350,auto...I will take some pics this week....just curious if it was a longhorn or not...Thanks!

Re: Got a '68 GMC..is it a longhorn?

if it's a 6 lug, then no. Not a Longhorn. Look towards the front of the bed... about 6 inches back, there would be a visable verticle seam where the normal long bed, and the 6 inch extention were butted together if it was a longhorn.

Check the hot lead wire going to the coil, mine came lose last week and left me sitting in the middle of the scrap yard. Fixed it with a pair of needle nose pliers and away I go.... Gotta love these old trucks, simple fixes.

Yea we changed the coil..not it. After the damn rain stops we will hook up a light to see if the distributor is getting any power...this dude has it a mess under the hood!

Re: Got a '68 GMC..is it a longhorn?

I don't know if we've ever seen a 68 GMC version of the Longhorn. Do they really exist?

Does anyone have any production information for the 68 GMC "Longhorns"

If your truck is 6 lug its a 1/2 ton truck period. Longhorns only came in 3/4 and one ton versions.

Re: Got a '68 GMC..is it a longhorn?

exactly, you have a 68 GMC 1500 long wheel base, or long bed, or long and wide... or what ever.
I have seen photos of a 68 GMC longhorn, but no numbers were provided... it looked like original paint, so I'll take it as true. I honestly don't see why they would not have made any.
No production numbers are avalible for the GMC trucks of this era... just guestimates.

A siera is a CST or Cheyenne...
A Siera Grande would be a Cheyenne Super.

Re: Got a '68 GMC..is it a longhorn?

Cool! Thanks guys, I will get pics as soon as the damn rain stops here!!!! Pretty nice body on it...it had nice paint at one time, some rust was starting and the guy spray painted it with primer...otherwise it's a cool looking truck. And I already have a new set of rims & tires ready to go on...once I get it running good enough!

Re: Got a '68 GMC..is it a longhorn?

I know of a 3/4 ton 69 GMC Siera Grande w/ a long-horn bed and Custom Camper emblems on the doors (above the handle) in a wrecking yard. 1st and only one I have seen. It took a front end hit.
