Smile 72 stepdeck.new project .

I picked up a 72 stepdeck form a old man last weekend. It's in good condition for being parked since 1992 he was the original owner. Funny thing is he put stacks on it and I thought it was a 3 on the tree because it has a clutch pedal but he had changed it out to automatic sometime in the early 80s! Still don't know what auto it has .. it has a straight 6 in it now .. ha ha the old guy said "just put some gas in it and fire it up" yea I dumped a small amount in the one barrel and it drained out of the gaskets ! This will be a fun build for me and the kids. I sold my last 1970 swb back In the late 90s along with my other 4x4 70 swb . I will post pics along the way ! Any help or suggestions comments will be helpful!

Good looking project....should keep you busy and out of trouble
There is something about the wide rear tires and wheels that appeals to me...guess it's my age

I'd try brake cleaner after you wipe out the center section.....I'd even go so far as doing the same in the axle tubes....check the condition of the axle bearings, pull the old seals, liberal bath in brake cleaner & clean it out like a gun barrel....and let it dry before you put new gear oil in.

Looks pretty darn good...we all can't have Foose's or Delmo's expertise or budget!

Re: 72 stepdeck.new project .

Okay well it's been extremely cold here in Oklahoma got down to 2 degrees in my heater quit working because the diesel gelled it sucks. Now it's warmed up it's almost 70 degrees lot of wind and some fires I can smell but at least my fingers aren't Frozen and I can do some more work. I got the front end done Springs calipers rotors tie rods but still need to do a new manual steering gear the old one shot. Finish the rear diff lot of rust in the tubes ordered some new break drums from Summit they were cheaper but the adjuster holes are not punched out that sucks. Got the brakes done on the rear filled it with new gear oil but I'll have to drain it because I forgot to tighten the center pin bolt for my carrier. Still deciding if I want to put a 400 big block or just go ahead and do an LS motor like everyone else.

Re: 72 stepdeck.new project .

Trying to use the old brake lines they seem to be in good shape just trying to remember how they were routed I don't remember my 70 having the brake lines on the outside of the frame going to the master cylinder

Re: 72 stepdeck.new project .

I really need to get rid of this step deck. I would like to get a Fleetside bed kit or find an old bed that needs the sides replaced.
