Frustrated! Glass install

Took my 71 to have new front and back glass installed. Guys show up at my Granddads body shop to do it and refuse to touch it when they realized it had the stainless trim. I had specifically called these guys to do it because it had the trim in it. They said they had messed up a guys trim and had to replace it and wouldn't touch another one. Now what am I gonna do?

Do it yourself, (with a buddy...your granddad?). read up on it and go slow. Use plenty of soap...I use Windex.

This is probably what I am going to hafta do. Was trying to save time and have it done. My grandad is 81 and has done several and has an old buddy that was a Chevy mechanic for over 30 years that has done them back in the day so will prolly hafta go that route.

My son and I did my front and rear. Start with the rear window, get a little confidence before tackling the front. Take your time and use plenty of soapy water or windex for lube. I bought a piece of 300 paracord to mine. It worked pretty good. It is still very nerve racking... good luck.

My daughter and son helped me. We did both front and back in a couple of hrs. No leaks in 5 years so I guess we did Ok. Just take your time and be easy with it.

I used some plastic knifes to help get the corners in right and cord inside the gasket to pull the gasket through the opening. As stated use plenty of soap.

Wow, I watched that video. Most mortals would break the glass trying to get it out as demonstrated. I think that guy came really close to breaking the windshield. I recommend cutting the original rubber seal so the glass almost simply lifts out. And, finally, soap or Windex would have made the install soooo much better. Another tip, might be to ensure you put upward pressure on the windshield while you work the rubber seal over the pinch weld. gravity tends to pull the glass too low...so keep working it upward as you work it in.

remember: practice makes perfect or you go broke. Either way, there's incentive.

Take your time, use lots of lube. Suction cups help, as you can pull in while pulling the rope out. Honestly, the biggest hurdle you have is make darn sure the trim doesn't pop out as you are installing it. If it does, start over.

the assembly manual also shows that some adhesive (butyl rubber?) should be used at the corners. I haven't seen much discussion on the board about this though.

They came with butyl rubber sealant from the factory because the factory couldn't take the time to check them for leaks and dealers didn't want to have to deal with leaks. You only need it if it leaks. And don't use silicone as a substitute.

I also second (or third) the use of glass cleaner as a lubricant. It's slick enough to work and doesn't leave the mess that dish soap can.

My 2 sons helped me put mine in. We did the back one first to get the hang of it and then did the front. Took all of 15 minutes and the rubber lays flat perfectly.

There are lots of people that will tell you to pull the top in first but we couldn't get it in that way. We pulled the bottom in first and worked each side around a little at a time toward the top. Use a circular motion when you get to the top corner while pulling the rope to help it around the 90 degree corner. I had the boys press on the outside with a flat hand as I pulled on the rope. Use lots of soapy water, I used a couple drops of dish soap in a spray bottle of water and soaked the rubber and pinch weld really good.

Don't be afraid to tackle this on your own. Watch the video and get two helpers and have at it.

I took mine to safelite auto glass . They ordered the rubber and the chrome trim to ensure fit. It cost me $250.00 . I tried it myself the first time ! Ill never do that again. Its way harder then the videos look and what anyone says. You'll probably break the windshield like me. Just call around and make sure you get the rite parts.

I found a company willing to do it for $250 but I hafta haul it to the shop and leave it for a day. But if they break anything they will replace it they said. So looks like that's what I am going to do.
