Swapping in a 454 in place of 307 - '68 C10 questions

I've got a '72 cast 454 block and heads that I'm going to be slowly building up.

And I'm sending out a check today to Tracey for the '68 Chevy C10 he's selling (thanks man!!), so it will soon be mine.

Anyhow...it originally came with the whopping 307 in it. Any tricks/secrets I need to know in regards to dropping in the 454 once it's done?

You'll need big block engine mounts and stands, and factory big block pulleys and engine brackets. It's best to buy the whole setup as a mathced set off the same truck.

I swapped a truck over to 454 last year and it was quite costly to get all of the correct parts rounded up.

i will be doing the same swap this summer. I still need to purchase all the parts.. what would awesome is if someone could post some pics of their engine comp. with a bigblock installed... good luck with your swap~JJ

They're so hard to find/expensive, I've pretty much given up on a BB swap and instead am contemplating a Motown-based SB from World Products... 427 or 454... there's no replacement for displacement... especially when you're hauling groceries and dropping your kid off at school

Here's a thread with lots of pictures of my old 70 model truck.

It started out as a 6 cylinder with no options. I converted it to a 454, auto trans, disc brakes, 5 lug, power steering, power brakes, all of that.

Parts Needed

BB Motor
BB Motor mounts/frame stands
BB Alternator Brackets for SWP
BB Power Steering Brackets for SWP
BB Power Steering Pump for SWP
BB Power steering Reservoir for SWP

Optional/Would be nice
BB Fan Shroud
Heat Shield (for cab on pass side)
T400 with BB/T400 Shift Linkage Bracket(frame mounted)
High Hump floor(in cab)
3 or 4 Core Radiator with mounts
BB AC Brackets for SWP

It is not necessary to use the SWP and bracketry. I have a 454 in my 67 using LWP and brackets but they look more original and the wiring fits, etc using the correct SWP.

Let your checkbook be your guide.

you don't absolutely have to have a high hump cab with big block and turbo 400. A low hump cab will work too.

dam I have like no room in my engine bay for a 4 core radiator mines TINY and it has heat issues how the hell did you fit that massive radiator and fan in there?

Guys, it's just a standard 4-core radiator sitting in the stock location, same as a smallblock. I don't know what setup you have, but these trucks came with a short water pump and mine has a seven blade fan with a clutch. The fan shroud's different than small block too.

I have a smallblock and a 4-core so I have plenty of room. But like he said it s just a 4-core in the factory spot, nothing special.

Its not as difficult as some make it out to be. I put a 454 in my K10 shortbox that originally had a smallblock in it. I used the same motor mounts but slid them forward 1.5 inches to make more room for the H.E.I. distributor.
I even used the longwater pump which was on it although that will be changed to original swp style soon. 4 core radiator, bb shroud, and fan fit perfect. You can use the remote style power steering with either the short or long water pump provided you have enough grooves on your crank pulley.
The only real mod i had to make was shortening the push rod between the clutch fork and z bar to compensate for moving the mounts forward. The headers even fit with the only issue being where they pass by the rear spring shackle. A little heat and a hammer gave me the depression to clear the bolt head. You wont regret the swap. Are these the brackets you all are talking about?

I don't know if this auction is for long or short waterpump...but either way I've found a bunch of these on ebay...
