Swapped Intakes Now Trucks isnt Running Right

I swapped the offenhauser 360 degree intake on my truck for a Edelbrock Performer EPS. The truck still runs but just barely. I have had tho advance the distributor well past where it was for the 360 intake. When you try to take off the truck bogs down and tries to stall. If you keep the rpms up you can take off but it shutters and jerks all the way through the gears. I think is also running rich. I starting to think that the jets are not stock in the carb (its a Holley 600). Anything else I'm missing?

What was the original timing and what do you need to set it at to run right?

Also, is it the same carb?

Re: Swapped Intakes Now Trucks isnt Running Right

It is the same carb. I do not know the exact numbers because the timing tab on my truck doesn't have numbers just notches. It was between the first and second notches with the 360. I do not know where it is showing on the tab right now. I was rushed yesterday. I do know that the vacuum advance is rotated further. The lines on the advance are at their limit. They were not like that originally.

Sounds like you might have the dist. at least one tooth off. I would check that, re-check plug wires, and check for vacuum leaks. Maybe geezer will have some more ideas...

Re: Swapped Intakes Now Trucks isnt Running Right

I made sure I pulled and installed at TDC but I will double check. I thought vacuum leak so I sprayed car cleaner around the carb and intake gaskets. It didn't change the idle.

Re: Swapped Intakes Now Trucks isnt Running Right

Sounds like the dist is about two teeth off.

Pull the #1 spark plug and rotate the engine around to TDC. See there the rotor is pointing.. maybe post up a picture and well help you get it figured out.

With the engine at TDC the rotor should be 'pointing' at #1 (or relatively close)

Good place to start anyway

Re: Swapped Intakes Now Trucks isnt Running Right

You don't need numbers on the timing tab if you know each line on it is 2 degrees.
Plug the vac line to the carb, set your timing at 12 and see if that helps.
Check for vacuum leaks too.
Also one thing lots of people don't know about is that if you put a longer bolt in a bolt hole that has a pushrod lined up with it, that the longer bolt can interfere with the pushrod action holding a valve open causing poor running.
Also check the float level in your carb as a last resort if you find nothing else.

The ole #5 and #7 spark plug wires getting crossed up could cause it too.

1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 It's easy to get 5 and 7 crossed when you put things back together. Ask me know I know

Re: Swapped Intakes Now Trucks isnt Running Right

It looks like the Distributor was off a tooth. The truck is running much better now thanks for the help.
