Barn find last weekend. This will get everyone riled up
I went to look at some 67-72 trucks at this old fella's place and they were all rusted beyond resemblance or wrecked. I pulled a few good parts, but thought I was about to leave empty handed. I had even taken my trailer, a battery and some gas thinking I might buy a complete truck. As I was leaving he says "Too bad you don't like Fords. I got a nice Mercury Comet in the barn." I went and looked at it and he said he bought it about 10 yrs ago as is. He said when he bought it he drained the gas tank to keep from ruining it. PRAISE THE LORD, PASS THE AMMUNITION!!! We put a battery and gas in it and drove around his driveway! What really blew my mind was when he reached over and turned the AC on and cold air came out!!! I did some research and the S-22 is a little more rare than the regular Comet. (sporty package, mostly trim, still has a 170 c.i. 6 cyl.) It is before Mercury came out with the Caliente with the V8. He said he decided to sell since he has never been able to find a fender at wrecking yards locally since cars this old are all gone (crushed). I don't think he has ever even heard of the internet. I almost asked him if he tried Hemmings books, and decided to keep my mouth shut (for once). I am looking for a fender, grille and possibly some bumpers and plan to sell it to finance my 72 truck build. I have already pulled the old bent parts since these pics and located several specialty yards in New Mexico and California who want around $500 shipped for the grille and fender. I bled the brakes and took it down the dead end road in front of my house. The odometer read 42,xxx, but judging by the scary noises coming from the front end, I would say 142,000. Sorry to get everybody all excited with expectations of a barn find 67-72 truck. I am not a "Ford guy" but could not pass it up. I have pics of it in his barn, but it is sorta anticlimactic, since it is a newer metal barn and has only be been thee about ten yrs. let the crucifixion begin! HAHA

Re: Barn find last weekend. This will get everyone riled up
You'll get no crap from me.....I think any old unmolested car is cool.
A few years back I bought a 67 Chrysler Imperial 4d just because it had low mileage, was so original, and the price was right......turned it and made a couple grand.

Another car from the 1960s which has long faded into the past. Completely unremarkable.
Dude, now if it was a 1960s musclecar you might have something. But a 6 cyl 1962 Comet? I guess you could make it pro street like this one http://www.carnut.com/cgi-bin/image....use/nat202.jpg |

This brings to mind the old quote "If I have to explain it,you wouldn't understand." True car guys get it for what it is.A cool piece of automotive history that has been preserved fairly well.It doesn't have to be their style, brand or color to be cool.It just has to be something most people would turn their noses up at.

WIDESIDE, that thing is sweet! Hopefully you can get the parts you need and get the paint matched up, would be cool to keep it original looking. Unless, of course, if you could find some aftermarket wheels that would fit. Nice find, and awesome price! I think rcrahn is jealous of your $500 ride since he didn't find the schaweeeeet deal!

Are those wheels 13" or 14"? If they are 14"s i think i have a set of factory hubcaps for it.

Re: Barn find last weekend. This will get everyone riled up
Not an old Ford guy but I can surely appreciate a cool old car no matter what kind it is.That one definatly looks cool! The milage could be 42k maybe she's just a little stiff from sitting around, the interier looks too nice to be 142.You'd think the seats would be more worn and such.I find a good indicater is how the doors close.I bought a 68 nova from a guy for 50 bucks about 17 years ago that showed 46000 on the odometer but the doors worked so good coupled with the fact that the 3 on the tree shift was tight as tight can be made me believe it wasent a14600.

Re: Barn find last weekend. This will get everyone riled up
Great find.I'd roll it.I would even bet you can score the parts a bit cheaper if you can find a small town wrecking yard that hasn't crushed.

Man... if it wasn't for that crunch on the front, that would have been one sweet survivor. It's still a great car, and I would definitely roll in it.
What are you plans for it?

Re: Barn find last weekend. This will get everyone riled up
Wow nice find. The interior looks almost brand new. I agree a few hp upgrades and that car will be a nasty little street sleeper. Id pro street it.

Re: Barn find last weekend. This will get everyone riled up
I am eyeballin' a 65 or 66 Rambler American with a 6 in it, the body is pretty straight, not too much rust, but the interior is nowhere near as nice as that is. I think it is a sweet ride and the in 6 with AC is all the more reason to run it as is (fix whatever needs fixed or rebuilt), but do not touch the motor as a V8 just isn't nearly as cool as that little sipper six!

Put an art Morrison chassis, a small block (chevy of course!) a decent drivetrain, and you've got a totally cool muscle FERD! Nice!

Re: Barn find last weekend. This will get everyone riled up
I agree 100%, that sucker has less than 100,000 miles on it.
This is a neat barn find. I'd locate the body parts and see if the paint can be matched... you might get lucky. Other than that, I think I'd just roll with it. |
