i thought i had a mag with an artical called poor mans power steering but i can't find it . I know it talked about putting a bearing some where in the front steering componits I think the pipman arm or idler arm. let me know if you have heard of this before. i think they were using a clutch pilot bearing or some thing of that nature.

I've heard of putting in a reduction gear box inline with the steering column. Used on old Unimogs. Could also get those in a powered type.

Nothing not built for it, though.

This was a popular mod on the old corevettes where the power steering was an external ram set up (just liek 67/early 68 trucks) that was VERY leak/failure prone.
Basicly, the ball joints were replaced with a new unit that had roller bearings. This did decrease the effort needed to steer...calling it power steering is giving it way more credit than earned...and it was more expensive than second hand power steering parts...but a LOT.
