Ok, Trans lines arrived and are now installed. Everything is wired and hooked up...I think??? Dumped a drop or two of fuel in the carb, I turn the key...she turns over and eventully starts to cough and spurter...but won't start. I have about 6 lbs fuel pressure going into the carb. Any idea's???

Not to be a smart ass, but did you pump the throttle? a couple dribbles won't do much to fire for the first time.

Re: Start up help Please!
Yea Andy pumped the throttle kept turning key, coughing and a small fire in the carb. Not a big blasting fire like you have when you are 180 off on the dist. though.

Re: Start up help Please!
try turning the dizzy a bit, maybe you are too far out of time. Also recheck wires. See if its dumping fuel in carb.

What is the gap set on the spark plugs?

Re: Start up help Please!
Just the first things that come to my mind:
* Adjust timing up a little (advance it), * dizzy may be one tooth off, * check spark plug wires for firing order (1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 clockwise), * look in the carb and work the throttle to be sure the accelerator pump is shooting fuel (not while trying to shart thought),

Re: Start up help Please!
About the only thing that will cause a fire in the carb is if the engine fires back through an open intake valve. This is usually caused by timing advanced too far or a sticky valve or adjusted too tight. The other possibility is the valve timing is off. If the cam and crank sprockets are misaligned then ignition timing will never be right. Your best bet is to line up the crank balancer with the timing mark with no.1 on top dead center and then set the dizzy rotor to the no.1 plug and follow the firing order as given. Be sure to go clockwise around the cap.

Re: Start up help Please!
VetteVet....that makes perfect sense...will do that. I'm thinking that is the problem cause I did have the dist out for rebuilding and put it back in without worrying or thinking about the rotor position.
Thanks everyone, let me see what I get this time. |

Re: Start up help Please!
Just in case you didn't know , the balancer mark will come up to the timing tab twice on each crankshaft rotation. No 1 top dead center and on no.6 top dead center. That's why it needs to be on top dead center on the compression stroke for no. 1 or it will be 180 degrees off and will not start. You could still drop the distributor on no 6. and it would start as long as the no. 6 cylinder is on the compression stroke. It's amazing how simple all this is but it's the most confusing thing about an engine for most people. I know I've had my share of trouble in the early days understanding it.

Holy Crap...This is a Monumental day for me and this truck...3 years later maybe 3.5 since I pulled the engine and a lotta help from you guys and this old tile setter gets the engine running.
I am thrilled! now just the fine tuning and dialing in! Thank you so so much everyone that has helped! If you think your $25 dollars for a subscription is not worth it...think again, how much would it have cost to have a mobile mechanic come out to fire up Lil' Red??? A lot more than 25 bucks!!! Peace out!!! Now I might start drinking again!!! Naw. Alex |
