Sandwich-style carrier bearing re-do

Anyone who has the older style carrier bearing like this and thought you couldn't rebuild it...

You can get a new bearing for it. The metal housing splits in half and a new bearing and rubber isolator are available. I had the driveshaft shop do it since I don't have a deep enough puller and the press fixtures at work wouldn't do it either.
You CAN'T get a new housing if yours is screwed up, so that's why I didn't want to risk it and let the driveshaft folks handle it. They said they do about one of these a month.

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Really, it doesn't look much different. New guts in an old housing. This is one of the few things I've repaired that I didn't slap some paint on before I put it back in. I just didn't have time...

I know that feeling. Got it out and get it back in to be ready for Monday Morning drive to work.
I could tell a big defferance in mine truck last night. That center bearing they said was shot. I couldn't even see out the rear veiw at speed.

Re: Sandwich-style carrier bearing re-do

Blowing the dust off this one!

I used a shop in Dallas to do my driveshaft work since I also needed it shortened for the 9" install. It was Driveshaft King, they didn't have any problem finding the part. Here's their # (214) 941-7122
The replacement part is the bearing and rubber, the 2 triangle pieces are re-used.

Re: Sandwich-style carrier bearing re-do

I had American Drivetrain in Ft.Worth shorten my driveshaft and balance it. To my surprise they painted it and made it look nice too. If anyone is in that area I'd recommend them. Does anyone know if there would be any more gains with a one piece driveshaft over a 2 piece?

Cheaper, less complicated, easier to work on.

Op, wow one a month, these guys won't be in buisness long! Takes me about an hour, if I have to install ujoints and reballance it.

Its pretty easy to remove a carrier bearing, cut it off, I usually use a cut off wheel on a die grinder. And as long as you're carefull you can put a new bearing with a punch on the inside race. We have drivers the correct size but that just makes us quicker.
