83 4x4... ignition operates backwards

I bought an 83 Chevy 4x4, and the ignition switch operates backwards.

History on the truck- it was originally an automatic and still has the automatic tilt-column. The truck was converted to a manual 4-speed. I was trying to figure out what was going on, so I dropped the column and had a look... I don't know where the switch is supposed to be, but it is mounted on the top of the column. It looks like it should be there. But if I unbolt it and flip it (so that it mounts on the left side of the column) then the key works in the correct way. Unfortunately, the column won't go back where it goes with the switch mounted like this, as the clutch rod is in the way. So, I had to mount it back on top and use the key backwards.

So, what gives? Where is the switch supposed to be (Haynes manual isn't clear on this). Is there a different switch for manuals, or was something screwed up when they converted to manual? Any ideas?

4x4 conversion with 52" springs
Maybe some new body panels

Tilt & non- tilt columns use different switches. As you have found out, they work in opposite directions.

So all I need to do is purchase a switch for a tilt column and all will be well?

Should be the fix. I think you will need to flip- flop the electrical plugs- no big deal. Install, adjust and you should be ready to roll
