Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
personally i dont think it would be worth the effort. the long horn frame is 133" and the regular lwb frames are 127" IIRC. so shortening the bed also requires moving the axle forward trimming the excess off the back or cutting the excess out of the middle. but if your really attached to the truck then by all means have at it otherwise its a lot less headache to find a lwb truck

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
Are you talking about shortening the whole truck? Or just a longhorn box down to 8' in order to fit a different truck with the 127" wheelbase?

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
Please do NOT shorten a Longhorn bed. There are plenty of great regular long beds out there. Longhorns are a very rare breed and should all be saved!!!!
Please do not mess with it. If you need a regular longbed it shouldnt be hard to find someone that would trade you for what you have.

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
It may seem easy to do when looking at a (far more rare and not reproduced) Longhorn bed,but it would be more like a nightmare. It would be far easier to lengthen the frame and driveshaft to fit the bed

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
Ok, to be more precise. I just want to shorten the box of a Longhorn and not the frame, I have a 127 "as a truck! The reason is that unlike you in the USA, here in Quebec it is very difficult to find a box truck that is in very good condition (just a little rust on the surface). I know very well that a box full of Sierra Grande (because it is a box GMC) is very rare to find but is what you would be ready to come exchange against me here a box of 8 feet (fleet or step) in such good condition. That's why I want to convert it into box 8 feet.

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
Being in ontario , I can agree how hard it is to find good tin. But look around , there is stuff out there. I know of 1 in this area , has all the holes for the trim , southern , priced right. only a 6 hour drive , will take less time than cutting!.

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
I know there are other beds for sale (rarely) but for the price I have to pay for the longhorn bed! Are you talking about Bill's Truck Shop has beds for sale? I know that cutting the bed is not the best solution! Maybe I could deconstruct the bed and only sell both bedsides and I would have to buy 2 bedsides of 8 feet?

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
I wasn't thinking of Bills ,there is one around here, but Bill always has california stuff , kinda expensive , but when you figure the cost of cutting & bodywork , plus you can sell your longhorn 1 , might be cheaper in the long run. Plus , your longhorn will be wood floor , you could end up with a good steel bed floor if you buy another. Just another opinion , you get to make the final call - Bob

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
if your just looking to shorten a box it shouldnt be very hard. it should be mostly bolted together. just take drill the spot welds off the extension and bolt on the front panel and that should be it. except for the wood bed but that really shouldnt be too hard. i will weep for the loss of a longhorn bed. and please in leu of flowers send those two extensions..

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
Ok,now that's different. The Stepsides aren't Longhorns, only Fleetsides. You are considering a 9' Stepside bed. It's back to having a far more rare bed than what you require, but would be easier. I would talk you out of it from the rarity stand point. It's expensive, but new bedsides can be bought for 6' and 8',but none for 9'. 1972 was the last year for these historic workhorses.

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
Thank's Ol blue but California is too far for me. The price of the shipping is more than my budget for a bed! It's my dream to go in the south of USA to get a car and drive it to Québec!

Re: Longhorn bed shorted to 8' bed?
IMHO--I think the idea of sourcing a bed locally is the best bet.
It's kind of tough with you guys up North; you either have a financial pinch with sourcing southern metal or have to work yourself to death in labor to mod what you have... Good luck on whatever you decide! ...and BTW... Gentlemen, please don't turn this into a WTB/ FS thread: "Please note that you must be a supporting member to post classified items.
