saddle tanks
Does anyone know if our trucks 67-72 ever came with saddle tanks from the factory that had the filler neck in the rear wheel well. I saw some that had the filler next to the rear wheel. No gas tank door. Was this an aftermarket job?
thanks.......

Yes there was a factory option for the saddle tanks. However it does not sound like the truck you are discribing has the factory optioned ones. If the truck came from the factory with them there would be a fuel neck that comes out near the top of the bed that would look just like the one on the cab. The fill hose itself would be boxed in the bed also. If it had one installed from the dealer, there would be aluminum doors with locks on them in the bedside itself. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Sigurd - there is a white '71 4x4 that comes through the station every weekend that has the tank just like you described. Owner said he made it himself, so he didn't have to chop holes in the bedside.

Dion,
Is that saddle tanks or saddle tank? as in singular that you have from the factory? I have only seen the trucks with just one saddle tank and filler neck on the drivers side box. Was interested if that is what you have? -Roger

Two, one on each side under the bed, one has the filler tube coming out of the bedside next to the regular one close to the top of the bedside, I also have the third (main) tank behind the seat and the other has the locking aluminum door on the other side of the bed. It has two knobs for switching tanks, one next to the seat on the floor on the driver side and one next to the dash bezel.

My 72 has a single saddle tank on the driver's side that was original. The filler is at the top of the bed also. The fuel valve switch is on the floor to the left of the drivers side of the seat. The cover plate on the valve is labeled for left, right and main, so I am assuming that you could have got them from the factory with both saddle tanks.
I have a seperate rotary switch mounted in the dash just to the left of the instrument bezel that switches the fuel gauge between my two tanks. When I first started looking at this switch it was not functioning but I was able to get it working by spraying contact cleaner into it and working it back and forth. I have never run across a replacement switch from any of the mail order places. Has anyone else had problems with a similar switch and what have you done?

My 68 C-20 has tanks that fill inside the wheelwells. Tanks hold about 15 gals each, and are basically rectilingular with 2 tubes up thru the center of each, and bolt to the bed with big headed bolts, like elevator bolts. Thks was an Alaska truck, and has factory looking rear sway bar, but GM did not produce those. No gauge provision in the tanks.

Dion,
What about the RIGHT hand side tank filer neck? Does that one have it sticking out of the right side box fender just like the left side or do you have an aluminum door in the right hand side fender? -Roger
