New Girl, now what?

Brought home a stripper last night. A no option farm truck that is. I6 3 on da tree and that's it, who knows what kind of maintenance has been done. She runs and stops, what would you guys do to assure she's reliable? I was planning to pressure wash the engine bay and undercarriage, change the plugs and wires, check the points, change all fluids, change the tires and maybe run some seafoam through her. What y'all think?

Sounds like a plan. Make sure it stops and steers safly and all of the front end is tight and the brakes have plenty of shoe and that the truck is safe you you and those around you. Assume that every one that you meet in the road is either your children or your parents or granparents or inlaws, well maybe not in laws. But if that were the case that every car you meet in the road was someone you knew and loved very much, and you also had someonein the pass seat with you it puts a different light on the importance of making them roadworthy before just hopping in and taking off for a ride. I don't get the feeling that you wanted to do the later without performing the former ,but there are some that are maybe more shall we say eager to be riding in their new truck that those things totaly slip their mind. It is not fun to have a truck come from the other lane into yours that is out of control. Oh, another thing to check is the brake fluids if it has set any time long at all it will probably be low and it will be seeping out. If not at least check the rubber brake lines while somebody mashes the brakes to check out the hose to make sure that they are not balloning during hard braking.I would also pull the valve cover and take a peep at the top end to get a little better idea of the motor condition by the cleanliness under the cover. If it is all gummy put some diesel or kerosene in it just pour it over the head. It will drain down to the pan cleaning some as you go. Start it up let it idle a few min then drain it out and add new oil and filter and it should help really clean it up in there. I have had some so gummed up that I have had the vaccum cleaner sucking out the carbon and a screwdriver and hammer breaking loose the gunk to clear the drainbacks. I cleared it out and it ran fine afterwards. Goodluck. Jim

Check the battery & cables and all lights etc..... fuel filter, air filter, grease all zerks. Maybe pack the wheel bearings, lube the locks, hinges, and everything that moves.

Sounds like a relative of my truck and looks similar to it as well..the advice already given sounds solid...I would start with that and get her on the road then clean her up as you see fit.

Well Delo, mines a little shorter and not nearly as nice of shape as yours, that's a beautiful truck. I'm pretty happy with the condition for the price tho.

It looks a lot like my 70 C-10. I drove it around like this for 14 years before I decided to have it restored.

There are good and bad reasons to restore these old trucks . . . now I can't haul anything except lawn chairs in it's oak bed !!!

I like em much better looking old but running great. Shiny show trucks that you can't use for anything are for flatlanders and city folk w/ too much time on their hands. The finish and patina on Bigcountry's truck is Purfect!

Search Youtube for CLR rust cleanup and see how it could be used on that hood. There is probably still paint hidden under there.

Started CLRing the truck, the hood and cowl have very little paint left. I was hoping for a better result but I'm still giving it a shot.
